Last weekend, we welcomed over 800 alumni, students, staff, partners and friends back to campus for our 150th Anniversary Weekend.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Glasgow Caledonian University's rich history, remarkable people and exciting future.

A special thank you to all our incredible speakers, exhibitors, performers and partners who helped make the weekend such a memorable success.

🎓 Stemettes Outreach Day, where 60 S4 pupils explored opportunities in STEM and were inspired by Professor Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE and the Stemettes team.

☕ More than 100 alumni, staff and friends joined us for our Afternoon Tea, hearing from the wonderful Julia Bryce, Lorna McNee, Dr Alex Gray, and Gilda Smith.

🎶 We sang and danced the night away at our celebration party thanks to the incredible energy of Colonel Mustard and Katy J.

💡 On Saturday, our Chancellor, Professor Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, was joined by Dr Abi Daré, Jade Gallagher, and Dr Rose Reilly MBE for our take on TED Talks, leaving audiences inspired and motivated.

📺 Dr Blythe Duff, former University Archivist Carole McCallum and PhD researcher Karen Dickinson took us on a fascinating journey through the cultural legacy of Taggart and the future of the Taggart: The People's Archive project.

🧠 Congratulations to Dr Vicky Wright MBE, Dr Abi Daré, Gordon Smith, Jane McCarry, and Mark Cox who put their knowledge to the test in our Mastermind Challenge. Vicky may have been the recipient of the first ever GCU Mastermind trophy - but you are all our winners!

🎙️ Bringing the celebrations to a close, Fat Brestovci and Robyn Richford from Capital Scotland kept us entertained while visitors explored GCU research and connected with University partners including Street Soccer Scotland, ACS (Advanced Clothing Solutions) and Smart Works Scotland.

As we reflect on an unforgettable weekend, we're reminded that the strength of Glasgow Caledonian University lies in its people, purpose and the community that continues to shape our story.

Thank you for helping us celebrate 150 years of GCU. Here's to the next chapter.💙

From Hollywood actress to marine biologist, Louise had big aspirations for who she wanted to be when she grew up. Now working as a News Desk Operator at GO Radio, Louise says she found her love for broadcasting while studying BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism at GCU.

“The thing that made the pendulum swing to journalism at GCU was the opportunities it gives you to peek into many things. To speak to people from all walks of life and tell everyone about it.”

The course offered a fast-paced environment while learning a plethora of knowledge, which allowed Louise to understand the daily life of a journalist.

“The classroom-turned-newsroom was fast-paced with people chasing interviews and searching for stories or editing videos. It gave us a taste of all the struggles that come with getting the beginnings of a story and the satisfaction of seeing it all come together at the end of the day.

Louise started to embrace other opportunities available at GCU and soon became the station manager at Radio Caley.

“Getting into the studio was nerve-racking at first, but I do believe it was crucial to building my confidence as a news presenter now.”

She started volunteering for The Hospital Broadcasting Service, where she became the main presenter. Then, in 2023, she started at Go Radio after making a good impression on her placement.

“My favourite memory was covering the Glasgow Film Festival red carpet and getting to speak to my favourite actor George Mackay of 1917 and Sunshine on Leith.

“After graduating, I was offered a full-time contract and I’m so grateful I get to call this my job. I’m also out and about interviewing ministers, MSPs, campaign groups and local Glaswegians, then back to the office to edit audio and videos and get them on air!

“If you’re like me and radio is your preferred pathway, then get yourself behind a mic. Whether it’s your university’s student radio, your local hospital radio or using your social media to share stories or music. They all show you have a passion for the industry that will help you get those crucial first steps in the door.”
