⚽ GCU at the World Cup: What a night!

Last night, we welcomed over 100 alumni, staff and students to campus for a fantastic celebration of GCU’s global impact on the beautiful game 🌍

With football fever building - and plenty of lively debate about Scotland’s chances - there was a real buzz in the room, bringing together a shared sense of excitement, hope and belief.

Our brilliant alumni panel - Lewis Irons, Amy Irons, Craig Telfer, Jim Delahunt and Liam McLeod -shared expert insights from tournaments past and gave us a flavour of what’s to come as they guide audiences through every twist and turn of this year’s World Cup.

We also heard fascinating reflections from GCU alumni and football legends Dr Pat Nevin and Gordon Smith, who offered their expert take on the key stories to watch in the tournament ahead.

The evening closed with an inspiring conversation between Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Mairi Watson and Dr David Duke MBE, GCU honorary graduate and Founder of Street Soccer Scotland, exploring the power of football for the Common Good.

The University is a proud partner of Street Soccer’s Kitback, an initiative that collects and resells pre-loved football shirts to fund life-changing programmes that create opportunity, strengthen communities, and change lives.

💬 Jillian Watt, Director of Advancement and Communications, said: "GCU’s impact on sport - especially football - is far-reaching. From global broadcasters to graduates working across physiotherapy, coaching, performance analysis and psychology, our community is shaping the game at every level. It was brilliant to share in the excitement of the build-up. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event such a success 👏"

Go on, Team Scotland - the GCU community, and the nation, are right behind you!

The event that changed her life: Find out how Abbie Graham went from the front row of a Fashion Advisory Board event to working alongside Dr Tessa Hartmann CBE.

“It was a nerve-wracking but really exciting experience, and one that I'll remember forever. That one event has opened up so many doors for future things.”

“If I hadn't taken the risk and gone to that event, then I wouldn't have made that connection with Tessa and she wouldn't have offered me the job that I have today.”

Read all about Abbie's journey from university hallways to fashion week runways in the 2025 edition of the GCU Alumni Magazine. 📖

GCU graduate Anton Lavery, Director of Atlas Winch and Hoist Services, is proud to be part of our alumni community - and even prouder to give back by supporting a scholarship through our 150th Anniversary Campaign.

For Anton, the decision to pledge his support is deeply personal. He reflected on his own path to higher education and the people who believed in him at pivotal moments. Their encouragement changed the course of his life, inspiring him to open doors for future students who may be facing similar challenges.

Anton shared: “A long time ago, somebody helped and supported me and made it possible for me to go to GCU. At that stage in my life, I honestly thought the chance to go to university had passed me by - but I was wrong.

"Once GCU opened that door for me, I never looked back. I will always be incredibly grateful to the University, and to my employer at the time, who encouraged and supported me to pursue a qualification and take that next step. Their belief in me made all the difference.”

Today, Anton’s generosity ensures that others will have the same opportunity to unlock their potential, pursue their ambitions and experience the transformative power of education — just as he did.

Glasgow Caledonian University's collaboration with Turner & Townsend was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Business Engagement in Universities prize at last night's Herald Higher Education Awards. 👏

The award celebrates Turner & Townsend's generous support for our sector‑leading 150th Anniversary Scholarship Campaign, which was launched in response to a significant rise in scholarship applications from care‑experienced and estranged students. 💙

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Mairi Watson said: “We are deeply proud to receive this award, which reflects the power of genuine partnership. Turner & Townsend, like us, understand that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Their commitment to a diverse, highly skilled workforce, and their leadership as the first corporate partner in our campaign, means together we are opening doors for the next generation who will shape Scotland’s economy, infrastructure and communities.”

Peter McGettrick, Turner & Townsend's UK Operations Lead, said: “The 150th Anniversary Campaign is about investing in our future leaders who will end up transforming industry and society. This award recognises our shared commitment to creating opportunities that transform lives, as this campaign does exactly that.” 💬

The newspaper said “the radical scholarship model is clear evidence of how educational organisations are actively working to reach new audiences".

Alumni and Turner & Townsend's leaders, Dr Murray Rowden, Global Head of Infrastructure, and Peter have championed the campaign alongside the University’s Founding Donor, Sir Alex Ferguson CBE. Their leadership and advocacy were instrumental in designing the scholarship and mobilising wider support. 🤝

Aria moved 200 miles from the rural hometown in the North of Scotland to study International Marketing at GCU. Her scholarship made this leap possible and gave her ‘freedom from all the worries’.

She grew up in a kinship care arrangement with her grandparents and took on caring responsibilities at a young age. When it came time to move to Glasgow for university, the distance magnified everything.

“Glasgow is 200 miles away from where I’m from. I’d spent my whole life in a small, rural town; I knew everyone there. Coming to a big city, adjusting to independence, being on my own for the first time… it was a huge step.”

She is grateful to have had the reassurance and support of a Common Good Scholarship throughout her full University journey.

“It was a sense of relief. I couldn’t have even thought about all of this support coming my way. It was such a blessing.

“There’s definitely been times I’ve thought that if I didn’t have this kind of support, I don’t know how I would have found that balance.

“From my personal experience, having that sense of freedom when you’ve had concerns about restrictions on your life during your studies has been a life-changer.

“GCU has supported me through everything, from first year to now, and I can see it will support me through graduation too, which is amazing.”
