Yesterday, we were delighted to host the Equalise Centre Day at the University of Glasgow, bringing together researchers, policymakers, practitioners and partners to connect, reflect and share ideas on advancing health equity.

A huge thank you to our inspiring speakers from Public Health Scotland, the Scottish Government, Scottish Women’s Budget Group and Voluntary Health Scotland, whose expertise and insights sparked engaging discussions and helped deepen our collective understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Events like this highlight the importance of collaboration in driving meaningful change. It was a pleasure to welcome colleagues, collaborators and friends of the Centre, and to see such enthusiasm for translating evidence into action.

We look forward to building on the conversations and connections made throughout the day as we continue working together from evidence to equity.

New University of Glasgow-led research has revealed that up to half of chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases may remain undiagnosed, despite CKD now being the ninth leading cause of death globally.

Published in The Lancet and led by Dr Jennifer Lees, the landmark series of papers highlights how wider use of a simple urine test could significantly improve early detection and treatment of the condition.

CKD affects an estimated 844 million adults worldwide and around 7.2 million people in the UK. Yet many individuals remain unaware they have the disease due to a lack of symptoms in its early stages.

The research calls for greater investment in diagnosis, prevention and treatment, with particular attention to groups disproportionately affected by underdiagnosis.

As thousands of kidney experts gather in Glasgow this week for the European Renal Association Congress, these findings reinforce the importance of early detection in reducing the global burden of kidney disease.

💜 New funding will support vital research into Dravet Syndrome, a severe and hard-to-treat form of epilepsy which begins in infancy.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow, led by Professor Andreas Brunklaus in our School of Health and Wellbeing, have secured a three-year Endeavour Project Grant from the Epilepsy Research Institute to help improve understanding, treatment decisions and care for children living with the condition.

Working alongside collaborators at King’s College London, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Dravet Syndrome UK, the project aims to develop family-friendly tools and measures to support clinical trials, NHS care and future gene-targeted treatments.

The MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) has received samples from around 20 individuals who were aboard the ship.

Researchers at the CVR are examining blood and nasal samples from passengers, crew, and traced contacts.

Professor Emma Thomson, Director of the CVR, said the main aim is to investigate potential treatments and a vaccine:

"We are working on improving our understanding of how the virus divides, transmits, and thinking about how current antiviral treatments can be used as a new treatment,"

"For example, some vaccines that have been designed to fight against other types of hantavirus might also work against the Andes strain."

The CVR is one of the few specialist laboratories in the UK that can rapidly scale up for this kind of research, as it did during Covid-19.
