The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) was proud to contribute to the 19th International Design Conference (DESIGN2026), participating in a week of discussion, collaboration, and exchange with the international design research community.

During the conference, DMEM researchers shared work across a wide range of topics, including healthcare design, systems thinking, and design education, as well as emerging areas such as AI, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. Together, these contributions highlighted the breadth of research taking place within the department and reflected DMEM’s continued interest in addressing current and future challenges in design.

Over the course of the week, DMEM colleagues delivered six papers and presentations, led three workshops, and took on key leadership roles as session and meeting chairs during three sessions.

We extend our congratulations to everyone involved in making DESIGN2026 such a success. The energy, openness, and collaboration throughout the event highlighted the strength and ambition of the international design community.

Returning to Strathclyde, we look forward to building on these connections and continuing to drive forward impactful research and education in design.

A huge congratulations to students Alex Dixon (Year 4 PDI) and Leo Randall Brown (Year 2 PDI), who have won the “Advanced Challenge” Scottish Regional Final of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Design Challenge.

Competing against strong teams, they delivered an outstanding performance and will now progress to the UK National Final in London this October. The team was supported across the semester by Shravan Prassadh (PDE 3), Alessandra Triscari (PDE 4) and Samuel Jefferson (PDE 4).

Teams were tasked with designing and building a robot capable of climbing wire ropes and pipes for maintenance applications, performing inspection tasks, and transporting loads under strict constraints. Our students impressed the judging panel of senior industrial IMechE members with a robust and innovative mechanical solution, clever use of gearing and digital encoding systems and a high-quality technical and professional presentation.

Their design outperformed the competition across all judging criteria. An exceptional achievement! We’re incredibly proud of their work and look forward to seeing them represent Strathclyde at the national finals.

Join us for ‘A celebration of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at DMEM’ event.

We aim to bring together students, alumni, and industry to showcase how ideas developed within the department translate into real-world impact. We’ll hear from two inspiring DMEM alumni who will share how the skills, confidence, and entrepreneurial mindset they developed during their time here helped them go on to build and lead successful businesses. We’ll also hear from industry partners who have collaborated with DMEM through initiatives such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) and Innovation Vouchers, demonstrating how working with the department can help turn ambitious ideas into practical solutions.

Spaces are limited, so if you’d like to join, please register below to confirm attendance:
