CEERES student Oliver writes for Vlast.kz! 🇰🇿

Last month, one of our students, Oliver Fisk, had a long-read article published in Власть. Интернет-журнал., exploring one priest's mission to build an Eastern Orthodox church in Kazakhstan free from the Kremlin's influence.

Oliver is currently doing his internship at Vlast.kz, one of Kazakhstan’s only independent news sources.

You can read the full article here - https://vlast.kz/english/68092-father-iakov-and-eastern-orthodoxy-in-kazakhstan-amid-the-war-in-ukraine.html - and click through the slides to hear more from Oliver about the article as well as his internship there

Want to learn more about the interesting, unique history of the University of Glasgow’s Central and East European Studies (CEES) department? Glasgow led the world with regards to Soviet Studies during the Cold War thanks to Alec Nove, an academic who was the son of an exiled Menshevik, and who settled in Glasgow in the early 1960s.

You can read more about Alec’s story, and of the history of our CEES department here at the University of Glasgow, in Jamie Maxwell’s article written for The Glasgow Bell

📍 CEERES Consortium meets in Tartu for strategic planning and application development

On 21–22 October 2025, CEERES partners from nine universities gathered at the University of Tartu, Estonia, for two days of strategic planning, programme development, and consortium coordination.

Dr. Anna Dekalchuk and Dr. Clare McManus represented the University of Glasgow, joined remotely by Kaitlyn Kobol and Hannah Justad from the Erasmus Mundus Administrative Team.

Day one featured a Resubmission Bid Writing Retreat, organised by Anna, providing a focused environment to revise the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master proposal. Partners worked through EACEA feedback, refined key sections, and explored new ideas on labour market analysis and external funding—setting a clear course for resubmission in February 2026.

Day two centred on the Consortium Management Board meeting, bringing together partners and student representatives to discuss institutional updates, joint courses, and shared processes. Key discussions included dissertation workflow improvements, harmonised marking criteria, and the role of AI tools in academic work.

The meeting closed with plans for upcoming events, including the December 2025 Graduation and the 2026 Student Conference—reaffirming CEERES’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and excellence across the consortium. 🌍
