Why choose NAOME at Strathclyde?

We are pleased to share a new video featuring NAOME students and staff, offering an overview of what it is like to study Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering at Strathclyde.

Please watch the video, and you will hear about:

the department’s Kelvin Hydrodynamics Laboratory and large-scale experimental facilities, with laboratory testing embedded within the curriculum

a supportive learning environment, with smaller group teaching and strong academic and professional support

extensive industry engagement, including final-year projects supported by external partners and opportunities to build professional networks

clear pathways into employment, including internships and graduate roles secured by our students

One of our current students explains that NAOME felt “more applied and more niche,” and, after researching, they found a department ranked among the leading programmes globally. Another highlights how the department’s network helps students connect directly with industry partners before they even graduate.

Prof Ibrahim Fahmy Abdelaty, NAOME Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering Department, from University of Strathclyde highlighted that we are on our way to strengthen the relationship between both organisations, which has been resulted in the third site visit to Subsea7 Technology hubs in both Aberdeen and Glasgow in 12-months.

Professor Ibrahim added: Scotland is ranked as the first technological hub in global offshore industry and also owns a remarkable historical reputation as home of outstnding Offshore Engineering's teaching, learning and research. in light of that, strengthening Collaboration between Industry and academia is considerd shared strategic objective for both University of Strathclyde, NAOME Department and Subsea7.

Facility tour was great opportunity where students got the opportunity to have hands on experience and insightful understanding about pipeline assembly, welding and testing technology, and how Offshore Engineering and Construction is being managed managed efficiently and efficiently. NAOME Department received impressive written feedback from our students on the informative briefings on the GWDC capabilities and capacity, Professor Ibrahim Fahmy added.

Alan Young, Subsea7 Deputy Director Pipeline Group Production delivered high quality comprehensive presentation on the Subsea7 world-class Pipelines Production Technology and Offshore Engineering business. He focused on the important role GWDC plays in quality control and quality assurance to save cost, time and resources, in addition to enabling latest welding and testing technology to be in the construction and installation of subsea Pipelines during offshore campaigns by the fleet of high tech pipelay vessels.

We are pleased to share that the University of Strathclyde, on behalf of the EU-funded SAFEMODE project, has been shortlisted for the 2025 CAREER4SEA EUROPORT Crew Welfare Award for our work on the SHIELD Taxonomy.

Vote now for SHIELD (University of Strathclyde, on behalf of EU-funded SAFEMODE Project) via this link: https://europort.safety4sea.com/career4sea-europort-awards/ -welfare
1- Scroll to Crew Welfare Award (first in the list)
2- Select University of Strathclyde [on behalf of EU-funded SAFEMODE Project]. A yellow check mark will appear.
3- Click Continue to confirm your vote

🗓 Voting closes: Friday, 12 September 2025

What is SHIELD?
SHIELD (Safety Human Incident & Error Learning Database) is a Human Factor (HF) taxonomy that systematically extracts HF data from safety occurrences. It provides a structured mechanism to learn from safety events, enabling:
- Better understanding of why and how incidents happen
- Stronger integration of human factors into design and operations
- Practical tools for improving crew welfare and overall safety culture

Why does it matter?
Human Factors are often at the heart of safety events, yet they are rarely captured in a consistent and usable way. SHIELD changes this by creating an open, evidence-based repository that empowers industry, regulators, and researchers to turn incident data into actionable safety learning.

Your support will help amplify the role of human factors in maritime safety and highlight the importance of tools like SHIELD in shaping safer designs and operations for crews worldwide

📰 Water temperature in ship model towing tanks can skew real-world ship performance predictions 📰

Researchers have found that water temperature in ship model towing tanks can affect the accuracy of real-world performance predictions.

Ship hull designs are evaluated by pulling scale models through water in long, narrow towing tanks to estimate how much resistance a vessel will face when moving through the sea, which in turn affects fuel use and carbon emissions.
