Naomi Mitchison, the author of Travel Light, a fantasy novel held by the GSA Library, was also the former owner of another item in the library’s collection. One of her personalised bookplates can be found in Highland Power, a 1943 report into hydroelectric power in the north of Scotland. A copy of the report was donated to the GSA by the National Library of Scotland in 2014, and is now held in the library’s Special Collections. [ 379 more words ]

Greek Vase Paintings: A Selection of Examples is one of three books in the Glasgow School of Art Library written by Jane Ellen Harrison, a ground-breaking woman in the history of academia who also occupies an important place in classical scholarship. She was born in 1850, and in 1874 went to Newnham College, Cambridge, to read Classics. Afterwards she studied archaeology at the British Museum in London, and would make a number of visits to museums in other countries. [ 352 more words ]

Rising in France and flowing through Belgium and the Netherlands, the river Maas was the site of a transcendent experience for the artist Hans Waanders, for it was there in 1982, that he saw for the first time, a Kingfisher. From that moment on he was captivated by this glorious bird and it became the sole focus of his work. The Press Art School was founded by commercial artist Percy Bradshaw in 1905 and was unique in that the course was delivered solely through correspondence. Run from his home in Forest Hill, London the courses were aimed at aspiring cartoonists and illustrators and at its peak were enrolling 3,000 students each year. In 1918, Bradshaw contacted 20 of the leading illustrators of the day and commissioned them to create special illustrations. [ 364 more words ]
