Planning to begin music lessons this September?

A trial lesson at The Glasgow School of Music is a genuine one-to-one teaching session—not an assessment that requires the student to arrive fully prepared.

It gives the learner an opportunity to:

• meet and begin working with a suitable tutor
• discuss previous experience and musical interests
• explore an appropriate starting level
• consider the most suitable lesson length
• experience how the teaching relationship feels
• receive a clear recommendation afterwards

Trials are available for children, teenagers and adults, including complete beginners and learners returning after time away.

Tell us who the lessons are for, the subject they are interested in, their previous experience, goals and realistic weekly availability.

Where a suitable trial route is available, GSofM will confirm the tutor, lesson length, time and payment clearly before the lesson is arranged.

Have you considered returning to music after years away?

You may remember more than you expect—but some things may also feel unfamiliar.

Reading might be slower. Technique may feel less secure. Confidence may have changed. Finding regular practice time may be more difficult than it once was.

None of that means you have missed your opportunity to return.

A good first lesson should not test whether you can immediately reproduce your former standard. It should establish where you are now, what you would like to play and what kind of routine is realistic.

Returning learners can begin by:

• rebuilding technique carefully
• choosing motivating repertoire
• restoring reading and rhythm gradually
• working around employment and family commitments
• setting goals that belong to their life now

You do not have to become the musician you were.

Should a music lesson last 30, 45 or 60 minutes?

The longest option is not automatically the most effective.

The right lesson length depends on the learner’s age, concentration, current level, instrument, goals and how much material they can usefully absorb.

30 minutes can provide a focused weekly route for younger beginners, early-stage learners or students working on a clearly defined area.

45 minutes gives many learners enough time to combine technique, repertoire, reading, listening and review without rushing.

60 minutes can support older students, adults, advanced repertoire, examination preparation, theory integration or broader musical work.

GSofM can recommend the most appropriate starting length after reviewing the student’s needs and proposed lesson route.

Parents can make an important difference to music practice at home—but they do not need to become the teacher.

The tutor should guide the technique, repertoire and musical detail.

The parent’s role is usually more practical:

• help protect a realistic practice time
• create a calm place to begin
• ask what the tutor assigned
• encourage effort rather than perfection
• avoid correcting every mistake
• tell the tutor when practice becomes difficult

Short, regular and positive practice usually achieves more than occasional long sessions shaped by pressure or conflict.

The aim is not to force a flawless performance at home.

It is to make practice calm enough that the student is willing to return to the instrument tomorrow.

Music theory should make playing easier—not feel like a separate subject disconnected from the instrument.

When theory is taught practically, it helps students understand what they are already seeing, hearing and performing.

• better musical memory
• more informed interpretation

A clear weekly structure gives students:

Progress is not always dramatic from one week to the next. Often, it appears through greater confidence, stronger rhythm, more accurate reading and increasing independence.

Paul’s appearance on Channel 4’s The Piano introduced a wider audience to a musical journey shaped by performance, adaptation and teaching.

But a performance is only one moment.

What matters afterwards is how music continues to shape confidence, understanding and connection.

That principle sits at the centre of teaching at The Glasgow School of Music. Technique matters. Accuracy matters. Consistent preparation matters. But students are not taught simply to reproduce the notes in front of them.

They are helped to understand what they are playing, make informed musical choices and gradually develop a voice of their own.

It develops through a consistent cycle:
