Careers Drop-ins next week 📢

Drop-In sessions are ideal for any quick careers related questions that you may have, for example advice on further study, preparing a CV or searching for a job. These sessions operate on a first come first served basis, so please do try to arrive as early as possible to ensure that you can speak to an adviser.

Drop-ins schedule for the week beginning 7th September:

Monday 7th September 12PM – 1PM

Tuesday 8th September 1PM – 2PM

Wednesday 9th September 3PM – 4PM

Thursday 10th September 1PM – 2PM

Friday 11th September 12PM – 1PM

Each of these sessions will take place in the Careers Centre, Campus Life Lounge, George Moore building. We always do our best to ensure that these sessions take place every day, but sometimes circumstances may dictate that we have to alter the time or cancel a session at short notice. If travelling to the campus specifically for one of these sessions, please check in advance that there has been no alteration to the time on that particular day. Keep a watch on our social media (Facebook, Instagram) to find out about any last minute changes that may affect the times listed above.

Diverse Leaders Programme

A 2-day workshop designed specifically for Students and Staff from Black, Asian, and Mixed Heritage backgrounds* at GCU.

Wednesday 21st - Thursday 22nd October 2026, 10am - 4pm

Please note: to participate, you must be available for the full duration of both days - please speak to your lecturers if you have any taught sessions that clash with this.

This programme is delivered by Grit: breakthrough programmes, in partnership with GCU Careers Service.

Details

Grit’s starting point with each individual is your strengths and talents, your passions and interests, your ‘assets’. We focus on what it takes for each individual to achieve and thrive, and to become the best they possibly can. We break the cycles of ‘deficit’ thinking, the assumptions that there is something wrong, the focus on what is lacking or missing, the reasons ‘why not’.

The workshop is an opportunity for you to:

- Explore and celebrate your identity, talents and strengths
- Increase levels of confidence and equip you with leadership and advocacy skills
- Amplify feelings of belonging and connection
- Build supportive mechanisms which can be sustained during and beyond your university experience

This is a real opportunity for you to connect with others, in a safe space, to discuss your university experience and to harness your collective energy to navigate and create success during your studies and beyond.

We’re looking for women from migrant and racialised backgrounds in Scotland who are studying or have recently graduated in journalism, media, communications or related fields.

Fellows will take part in professional training, receive one-to-one mentoring, develop and publish their own journalism, gain industry experience and build professional connections. Each fellow will also receive a £600 stipend.

Congratulations to Courtney Brewster, who is going into her final year studying BSc Applied Psychology, on recently completed the GCU Employability Award! 🏅

In working towards the award, Courtney worked at GCU as a Student Helper and Student Ambassador, supporting Open Days, Applicant Days, Freshers week, the Staff Christmas celebrations, and Winter and Summer Graduations. She also volunteered with MCR Pathways as a mentor to a young person, has been a GCU Senior PAL, and Social Media Coordinator for the GCU Psychology Society.

When reflecting on her experience applying for the GCU Employability Award, Courtney shared:

“I applied for the Employability Award because I wanted to have something meaningful to work towards alongside my studies and to recognise the experience I was gaining through my work, volunteering and involvement within the university.

I found the award process really valuable because it encouraged me to stop and reflect on experiences that I might otherwise have simply moved on from. It has also encouraged me to take advantage of opportunities that I may not have considered before and to continue building my experience alongside my degree. I feel that the skills and experiences I have gained will be particularly valuable for my future career.”

The GCU Employability Award run by the Careers Service, aims to encourage, support and reward students engaged in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Completing this award helps you develop key employability skills that employers now increasingly expect in addition to a university degree. You can also use this award to demonstrate to employers key examples of where they have put skills into action, which will be crucial for future job applications.

The GCU Careers Service are delighted to launch our new targeted work experience scheme for BME students - sign up for the information session to learn more!

When: Thursday 17th September,12pm-1pm
Where: Annie Lennox Building, W010 A

About the Programme: 

We have arranged a small number of project based work experiences within GCU, to support BME students who have less than 6 months work experience (paid or unpaid), to enhance their employability.

Programme Format: Mini Internships

- Short-term, project-based roles (5 hours/week for 7 weeks)
- Paid at the Real Living Wage £13.45 per hour
- Designed to accommodate academic schedules

Roles will be available in a variety of departments across the University.

Process:
1. Sign up to and attend the information session – held on Thursday 17th September.
2. Complete a simple application form with support from the GCU Careers Team
3. If successful, you will undertake a mini internship

Support will be offered throughout the process and for the duration of the role.
