Considering working while studying on a Student visa?

Before accepting or starting any work, check your eVisa and UKVI decision notice to confirm whether you can work and the maximum hours permitted. Your conditions will likely allow a maximum of 20 hours working hours per week during term time.

UKVI defines a week as Monday to Sunday. You must count the hours worked across all jobs and must not exceed your permitted limit during any individual week.

It is also important you aware of what work you can and cannot do on a Student Visa, e.g. you cannot fill a permanent position or undertake business activity.

Breaching your work conditions is a serious immigration matter and could affect your current visa and future immigration applications.

If you are unsure, contact the VISA Team before starting work.

VISA Drop in Cancellation (Glasgow Campus): Monday 3rd August 2026

Please note the VISA Drop in session for Monday 3rd August has been cancelled due to staff training.

The next Drop in will take place on Friday 7th August between 10-12pm.

Switched visa type or applied for leave in the UK under a different category?
Please note under the student terms and conditions you are required to notify the University of any change to your immigration status.
If you are a current student and you switch your immigration category/apply for leave in a different category, you are required to notify the University of this so your student record can be updated.
Please follow the steps outlined for further information on what you need to do.
1 - Notify the University: You can notify the University via email of your immigration change. In the first instance you can do so via email to [email protected] or [email protected]. You can also notify the VISA team in person at a Drop in session.
2 - Provide evidence: Upon notifying the University of your change in immigration status, we will request relevant evidence e.g. evidence of application in progress/evidence of new visa , so this can be uploaded to your Student Record.
3 - Keep us informed: Upon providing evidence of an application in progress, it is important you notify us of any updates including providing us with evidence of your new visa once granted. You will also need to provide this physically so the document/s can be scanned
