We are still highlighting GCU Students' Association STAR Awards recipients!!🥳

This feature focuses on Ross Carmichael who won Radio Caley – Best Overall Contribution! 🎙

❓How did it feel to be recognised at the STAR Awards?

🗣 “It felt amazing to see the hard work put into the station recognised, it added gratitude to the committee of the radio station as a whole as without them I wouldn't have been able to put as much work in.”

❓What does this award mean to you personally?

🗣 “The award personally means that I have been a successful help to the station, it adds motivation to do bigger and better things next year and it adds excitement for me into the new academic year!”

❓What inspired you to get involved in this area?

🗣 “Honestly? it was my best friend, Stuart Wilson. We have been best friends since second year and we had decided to join a society/student group together and we had both done a podcast on YouTube before so the radio station made the most sense, fast forward a few years and here we are.”

❓What advice would you give to other students about engaging with extra-curricular activities at university?

🗣” I think every student should get involved with anything they can, meeting new people and finding out what you enjoy doing is a blessing university provides you with the chance of doing and I wouldn't waste the chance to do so.”

A GCU student's research on how AI can help people navigate financial interfaces has received special recognition 🙌

This week's brings you the story of Erin McGurk, who finished third out of more than 200 people at the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium 💙

The conference, which was held in Bath this April, brings together women and non-binary students of Computing related subjects. It proved to be the perfect setting for Erin, who is studying MSc User Experience and Interaction Design, to reflect on her work 📲

“I think what inspired me to look at this as a topic is the fact I want to work in fintech (Financial Technology) in the future. I was interested in seeing if there was anything with AI that could actually help people – I don’t want it to just be associated with taking people’s jobs away.

"The AI system I created detects hesitation when reading content and then provides simplified explanations. This means more people have a clearer understanding, which could lead to them becoming interested in investing. It can provide other words, a graph or more information to help people understand what’s being asked of them.

“It’s a simple idea, but very effective. I carried out user testing in my class and tried it with 30 people. My results showed that there was a 30% reduction in task completion time, so I knew it was good research to use for my poster."

Well done, Erin 👏🏼

Do you want to help new international students settle into life at GCU? Well, being a Global Buddy might just be the ideal role for you 💙

Our Senior Global Buddies help make students feel at home by being there to answer any questions and generally provide advice and support whenever it's needed 👏

Applied Biomedical Science Graduate Kanwal Chaudhry (Kacy) took on the role and would highly encourage other students to get involved 🤩

❓ Why did you decide to become a Global Buddy?
🗣️ “I wanted to be a Global Buddy to basically help others in the way I wanted to be helped when I first came to GCU from a different country. It can be as simple as offering directions from a lecture hall but it is also about having a genuine friendship and showing empathy – that’s what I wanted to give to other people.”

❓ What’s been your favourite part of the role?
🗣️ “My favourite part was the friendships that grew beyond the role. Watching people develop in this new environment and helping them adjust to life at University was very rewarding for me.”

❓ Would you encourage other students to apply?
🗣️ “Being a Global Buddy is one of the best things you can do at the University. It’s not only giving you cross-culture communication skills, you’re getting the chance to be part of someone else’s story. You don’t have to have all the answers – you just have to be present and kind. If you want to make a real difference then be a Global Buddy.”

'The one where Ross and Rachael get married' 💍

Ross and Rachael are tying the knot this weekend in Greece and we’re wishing them both the very best of luck 💙

Their love story began right here at Glasgow Caledonian University after meeting while working together in the Student Comms Team back in 2019 🤗

It wasn’t long before their friendship blossomed to something much more, with the pair revealing their relationship to a very "shocked" team during lockdown in 2020.

Since then, they’ve gone on to buy their first home together and are now preparing to say “I do” this weekend.

Rachael has since left the role for new pastures but Ross remains with us🫶

Congratulations, Ross and Rachael! We couldn’t be happier for you both and we’re sure the wider GCU student community will join us in wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness together 💙

It's time to highlight our incredible students who have went above and beyond their university degree🌟
careers hosted the GCU Employability Award event a couple of weeks ago, recognising students who have made a positive impact in the community and worked hard outside of their timetabled classes.

The Employability Award helps students stand out in a competitive job market with an award that demonstrates key skills🤝

We spoke with Risk Management student, Zak McPherson:

❓What motivated you to apply for the Employability Award?

🗣“It was actually introduced to me by Hannah from the Careers Team when I gained an internship with the GCU Facilities Management team.”

❓In what ways has the award experience helped you feel more prepared for finishing university and entering the job market?

🗣“It looks really good on the CV but I think it’s also very good reflection and it shows off the various skills and activities you’ve done to get the certificate.”

❓Based on your experience, how would you describe the value of the Employability Award to other students? Would you recommend it, and why?

🗣“I think it is absolutely amazing and I would recommend it to everyone! As I said, it really shows off the skills you have developed, and it is a great motivator for you to go and find the opportunities to gain your hours. Pretty much anything you do on campus can be put towards it!”

Well done, Zak👏
