A Glasgow Caledonian University staff member is turning a nightmare vision of the Glasgow Subway into a horror video game – and has now been named a finalist in a major Scottish business competition. 👏

Thomas Welsh, an Assistive Technology Advisor within Glasgow Caledonian’s Disability Team, is the lead developer behind Loop, an indie horror game being created by five-person studio Box of Greebles.

The game is set in the Glasgow Underground at a time when the world is ending, with players trapped below the city and unaware of what is happening on the surface.

The idea came to Thomas during an ordinary journey on the Subway with his daughter Evelina. 🚇

Thomas said: “We were on the Subway, and I imagined what it would be like if something terrible happened on the surface and we didn't know because we were too busy eating pickled onion Monster Munch!”

Editors and journalists from across the world are attending the Global Street Paper Summit at GCU this week. 📰

Hosted by the International Network of Street Papers (INSP) the event has attracted editorial staff and support workers from Asia, Europe, North and Latin America.

Highlights have included sessions on what the world can learn from poverty in Scotland, hosted by Professor John H. McKendrick, and journalism in times of authoritarianism, led by Angus Dixon, Head of the Department of Creative Industries at GCU. 🤝

Last year, INSP, a Glasgow-based charity, donated the world's largest collection of street newspapers, including landmark editions of The Big Issue, to our Archive Centre.

A special exhibition of street paper covers is on display in the Sir Alex Ferguson Library building this week to coincide with the summit.

Mike Findlay-Agnew, chief executive of INSP, said: "INSP donated the global street paper archives to GCU, known as the University For the Common Good, so it's a fitting venue for our main summit programme.

"As mistrust in media and news avoidance are on the rise, the need for independent news could not be more essential." 💬

What if you could take home a piece of football history while helping students access higher education? 💡

The 150th Anniversary Weekend may be over but the silent auction of 12 football shirts personally signed by Sir Alex Ferguson CBE is still ongoing.

The 12 framed shirts span Sir Alex’s managerial career, from his early years at Aberdeen FC to his most celebrated seasons at Manchester United.⚽

All proceeds will support Glasgow Caledonian's 150th Anniversary Campaign, which aims to fund 150 scholarships for students facing the greatest barriers to higher education, including care-experienced and estranged young people.

The silent auction is already open and will close on Sunday 13 September. 📅

More than 800 people joined our 150th Anniversary Weekend as the University opened its doors for three days of celebrations bringing together alumni, staff, students, friends, partners and members of the public 💙

The weekend celebrated Glasgow Caledonian’s distinctive history, the people who have shaped the University and its continuing contribution to Glasgow and beyond.

It marked 150 years since the founding of the Glasgow School of Cookery in 1875 – the institution from which Glasgow Caledonian traces its history.

The programme included an anniversary afternoon tea exploring the legacy of the original Glasgow Cookery Book, an Alumni and Friends Reunion Evening, interactive campus tours and a series of talks and events.

📢 GCU London summer bank holiday closure 🔔

A reminder to students and staff that our London campus will be closed on Monday 31 August for the summer bank holiday. Our Glasgow campus will remain open as usual.

We have been awarded Merit Status by mental health charity Student Minds. 💙

We are the first Scottish institution – and just the second in the UK – to be awarded Merit Status in Student Minds’ University Mental Health Charter Award programme. 🏆

The award recognises our outstanding commitment to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Mairi Watson said: “I am delighted that Glasgow Caledonian University has been recognised for its sector-leading approach to mental health and wellbeing with this award.

“The charter programme has helped us significantly enhance our support for students and staff, and we look forward to further building on our important partnership with Student Minds.” 💬

Director of Student Life and University Mental Health Charter Lead Avril Williams said: “We are thrilled to have achieved a Merit in the University Mental Health Charter Award. It recognises the dedication of colleagues across GCU to embedding a whole-university approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our students and staff.”

“Engaging with the Charter programme has enabled us to strengthen a wide range of initiatives across the University. This includes expanding support resources, further developing a culture that empowers help-seeking and reduces the stigma surrounding mental health, and reviewing our practices and policies as an institution.
