Growing up with the violin, I’ve come to realise that music has very little to do with simply playing the right notes.
What matters more is style — the thought behind a phrase, the balance between technique and expression, and the willingness to interpret rather than just reproduce.
That’s what draws me to early music.
It’s a repertoire that asks for care and curiosity, and often reminds us that less can indeed be more.
The University of Glasgow Early Music Society is a space for collaboration and exploration, where early repertoire is approached thoughtfully and openly. By discussing, experimenting, and engaging with historically informed performance, we try to look beyond modern “standards” and rediscover sounds that were once flexible, vivid, and experimental.
I’m grateful for the musical influences that shaped how I play, and excited to share that sense of discovery with others at UofG.
We hope this society can be a place where careful listening — and curiosity — still matter.
Whether you’re an experienced player, a music enthusiast, or simply interested in listening differently, you’re very welcome to join us.
