Our next Community Orchestra Day is on Sunday 4 October on our Stag Hill campus, and we’re inviting local musicians grade 7 and above to join students, staff and alumni to rehearse Rachmaninov’s Symphony number 3, in just one day.

Musicians will play between 11am-5pm, before a final performance to friends, family and the general public at 5.30pm.

We still need more strings, - so dust off your violin and hunt down your cello for what promises to be another fantastic day of music.

Our next University of Surrey Community Orchestra Day will be held on Sunday 4th October 2026, rehearsing and performing Rachmaninov's Symphony no. 3.
Russell Keable will again conduct the day.
Register now for your place to play - we're looking for grade 7 and above on:

Meet Sara, Creative Music Technology alumni at Undergraduate level, Computer Science Masters student and expert in studying early AI in Music as a PhD student.

This weekend we're revisiting a collaboration between Music and Media and for the 'It Started at Surrey' series of podcasts, where second year student Sofia interviews DMM alumni, and takes a look at their careers since leaving Surrey.

Sara knew she wanted to study a PhD in Music, even in her first year as an undergrad student here at Surrey. Inspired by Professor Milton Mermikides' composition modules, Sara's passion is researching early AI in Music and
generative music for film and video games, and tools to help composers.
She still uses theory from Surrey and presents her research internationally.

This week we're revisiting a collaboration between Music and Media and for the 'It Started at Surrey' series of podcasts, where second year student Sofia interviews DMM alumni, and takes a look at their careers since leaving Surrey.

Heather talks about working on large scale events at Surrey, which gave her the edge in a very technical career, when combined with the creative and organisational skills learnt studying her Music degree. Plus - memories of Rubix you might not expect.

This semester, our Games Design students heard from special industry guest speaker Maksim Barinov, a UI Software Engineer at Wargaming UK. He joined us as part of our ‘need to know code: programming for games’ module and shared his professional expertise in UI programming for AAA games and the importance of taking part in game jams outside of lecture time.
