🐸✨ It’s World Frog Day! ✨🐸
The Animal Management team at Merrist Wood College are hopping with excitement as we celebrate some of our favourite amphibian friends!
Did you know there are over 4,000 species of frogs worldwide… and sadly, more than half are endangered? 🌍💚
Here at Merrist Wood’s Animal Management Centre, we’re proud to care for five incredible species:
🌿 Red-eyed Tree Frog
🌿 Australian Green Tree Frog (aka White’s or Dumpy Tree Frog!)
🌿 Dyeing Poison Dart Frog
🌿 Green & Black Poison Dart Frog
🌿 African Clawed Frog
And because we love them so much, here are some of our favourite frog facts:
💧 Australian Green Tree Frog – survives drought thanks to its waxy skin!
👀 Red-eyed Tree Frog – uses its giant eyes to help swallow food faster (yes, really!)
🎨 Dyeing Poison Dart Frog – named after a traditional practice where Indigenous peoples used its secretions to colour parrot feathers
🌈 Green & Black Poison Dart Frog – comes in a stunning range of colours thanks to a trait called colour polymorphism
🤰African Clawed Frog - between 1930-1960 they were used in pregnancy testing for humans
From clever survival tricks to incredible colours, frogs are truly fascinating creatures 🐸💫
