What if postgraduate study didn’t mean pressing pause on your career or relocating? For Rea Johnston, it didn’t.

While working full-time in Northern Ireland as a Mental Health Care Worker, she studied online for her Investigative Psychology MSc (Distance Learning) with the University of Huddersfield.

Since graduating, her path has included publishing her thesis on femicide, presenting at conferences and progressing into a Trainee Forensic Psychologist role.

Rea said: “The course exceeded my expectations in every way. It has genuinely been the highlight of my academic journey so far. The quality of teaching is exceptional, the lecturers are incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and clearly leaders in their field. Huddersfield is truly in a league of its own, and I don’t say that lightly."

“The content was brilliant. It’s genuinely riveting - you almost forget you’re learning.”

Read Rea’s full blog, where she explains how her course balanced flexible online study with one-to-one support and a strong sense of community throughout: http://hud.ac/wqb

If you’re curious about what online postgraduate study could look like for you, our next Postgraduate Open Day is a great place to start the conversation.

Last week we shared with you a little update about two families of geese and goslings. We have another update and it might be our favourite!

Inspired by our regular updates, PhD student, Music Researcher and Composer Farzad Hosseinabadi composed a wonderful piece of music and even shot a video all about campus's new favourite family.

All credits for video and audio go to Farzad, thank you so much for sharing this with us 🫶♥️

Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more prominent in day to day life. How do we ensure it is doing its job and making our lives more efficient?

Well, researchers at the University of Huddersfield are aiming to do just that. Professor Mauro Vallati and colleagues have developed an innovative traffic management system, which uses artificial intelligence to optimise urban traffic flow. The project has expanded into more towns and cities, as well as being granted a patent for use in China.

The system has many uses - not only can it be used to optimise driving at peak hours, but also to ease congestion during big local events, such as music concerts or significant sporting matches.

The technology makes use of available information on congestion, traffic lights, bus movements, incidents and air quality to generate real-time strategies that can transform traffic flow.

The AI-powered system has already been successfully trialled in Hull and Kirklees and is currently in use commercially in Blackpool and Glasgow, with Sheffield soon to come on board.

Wrangling a young person through their exams is an experience and a half. Well done if that’s been you over the last few months!

But you might be asking ‘what next?’

Some people know exactly what they’re going to do after Results Day, but others might still be working it out - and that’s okay. If going to university is something you’ve talked about with them, but you’ve still not landed on a definitive answer, you might want to look into Clearing.

Whether they’ve yet to apply, or they’re considering changing courses or universities, Clearing is the way to do it.

And now’s a good time to find out more, so you’re ready for when those results land.
