As part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) project, Huddersfield train station will be closed for 30 days from Saturday 30 August to Sunday 28 September 2025.

During this period, train services to and from Huddersfield will be significantly disrupted. Services on routes to Manchester, Leeds, York, and Sheffield will be diverted via the Calder Valley, and rail replacement buses will operate locally—especially between Huddersfield and Brighouse. Nearby stations, including Deighton, will also be closed.

We understand this disruption may cause inconvenience in the early part of the academic year; however, students are expected to attend all timetabled sessions. Attendance is particularly important at this time, as face to face sessions provide opportunities to meet with fellow students and staff; they will also provide key information about your course to enable a good start to your academic year. Please plan ahead and make adjustments to your travel arrangements to ensure you can attend.

Three things we want to make you aware of this week:

1. Exceptional Circumstances: What was previously known as Extenuating Circumstances will now be referred to as Exceptional Circumstances. A new and improved system for applying for Exceptional Circumstances (ECs) has been launched to make the process more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly. The Qualtrics-based EC form will be closed to new submissions at 5pm on Thursday 31 July. Check your email or visit the Exceptional Circumstances MyHud Announcement at hud.ac/uqj

2. Santander Fuel Your Studies: is giving away £500 in food vouchers. Use them at Aldi, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco, or at over 55 food outlets with a Lifestyle Eats gift card. 3. Just Ask: The Student Engagement and Attendance Monitoring Team have a team of coaches who are on hand to support you throughout your university journey. They will actively listen to your challenges, help you with any barriers that impact on your attendance and support you in identifying your next steps. ‘Just Ask’ and they will help you. Four things we want to make you aware of this week:

1. Picnic at the Planters – Next Wednesday 3 July, bring your lunch and join the sustainability team for a special picnic in the summer sunshine, at the Canalside/Woodland Walk planters (opposite the Lockside Building) between 12 and 2pm. Take in the beautiful nature on campus, relax to some chilled-out tunes, and have a casual chat about some of the upcoming events planned for the term ahead. Nibbles and refreshments will be provided.

2. Safer Student Officer: You can directly message PC Joseph Dainton, the University’s Safer Student Officer on Teams. His role is to aid keeping you safe by offering crime prevention advice and safety tips, either on a one-to-one basis or in a group. You are encouraged to report any suspicious activity/concerns to Joseph. His normal working hours are 8.00am - 4.00pm (Monday - Friday) and he will always aim to respond as these will be checked daily. Teams calls will also work when he is on duty on campus or, alternatively, his mobile number is 07711426033.

3. Scam Warning: Don’t fall for a scam! In light of the recent surge in sophisticated scams and cyberattacks, we want to send a reminder of these threats. Please note – The University Finance Team will never contact you to state they are calling on behalf of the police, and will NEVER ask you to transfer money between accounts. The University IT team will never contact you to give them your password or access to your authenticator app. If you have any doubt about the authenticity of any communications from the Finance Team, please email [email protected], and for IT related enquiries, contact [email protected].

4. Green Rewards Sustainability Competition: Join the first ever sustainability competition on campus to start earning points for taking relevant actions — like reducing waste and energy usage, sustainable shopping, or participation in GPA Global Awareness activities. You stand a chance to win one of 3 x £20 vouchers given every month, plus you gain wellbeing, learning and socialising benefits as well!
