As communities gather today to mark those who fell in armed conflicts around the world, the war memorial plays a central role in such acts of remembrance. In a free webinar on Wednesday, 12th November 2025, our colleague to Jenny Macleod will explain the role of war memorials in the aftermath of World War One.

Titled ‘ A Portal to the Past: what war memorials tell us about one hundred years ago ... and today’, booking is via the following link: https://lnkd.in/eEAbG3n2

Student lecture: The civil rights movement in the American media

How did the media act as a battleground in the civil rights struggle in the US? Join cultural historian Dr Barnaby Haran from the University of Hull to discover how newspapers and magazines used photos to make protestors appear as heroes or villains. We’ll then fast-forward to today, and discuss why looking at history in this way can have serious implications for our understanding of the ways the media can weaponise images of protests.

Wednesday 17 September @ 17:30 UK time
