Earlier this month we were privileged to bring the magnificent Kate Vigurs back to campus. The Drama graduate and author of the books 'Mission Europe', 'Mission France' and 'Women of SOE' returned to campus to talk to students and members of the War Society about her work.

'I was completely unprepared for the raft of emotions and waves of nostalgia that followed, especially meeting up with a former tutor,' Kate said. 'Thanks to the alumni department a special tour of the Gulbenkian was laid on for me – there I trod the same boards and dizzied at the same fly floor as I had back in the day, and marvelled at the unchanged foyer with its posters of the plays and shows that shaped me into who I am today.'

Today Kate is a visiting academic in the department of Political & International Studies at the University of Warwick and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the students were delighted to hear from her on her area of expertise: women in World War II. Those who were present will have heard from not only an expert but a passionate speaker and an advocate for our university.

'My gratitude to the University of Hull is unwavering; a life changing, opportunity giving and character-building university that will always have a place in my heart.'

Last week we were excited to meet alumni at our first ever West Yorkshire Alumni Social which was held at The Canary in Leeds.

As to be expected from a meeting of Hull alumni, the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. Guest of honour, the Right Honourable Alan Johnson, gave a short talk to welcome those who were present as he discussed the power of the Hull connection and why he is proud to be our Chancellor.

It was great to have the opportunity to meet so many of you on the evening, and to have lots of positive conversations. We can't wait to come back and see you again!

It may be the end of the world but it’s a promising start for a group of University of Hull alumni.

Final Pill, the debut feature film from writer and director Caylem Scott and producer Joe Shepherd... Filmed and set within a Hull flat the apocalyptic horror story was made with a crew of over a dozen former Hull students.

Daylight Comes Through the Cracks is an exhibition by 2025 MA Education graduate Isaac Yeboah that will be showing at Artlink Hull | 87 Gallery through May and June.

In this exhibition Isaac invites us to experience the detailed tapestry of Ghanaian folklore, which is often communicated verbally between generations. Isaac was the first recipient of the gallery's Streams Bursary in 2024 and they are delighted to extend their support of his unique practice through this commission and exhibition.

Celebrate the launch on Friday 1 May 2026, 6-8pm (quiet hour 5-6pm) or join Isaac for an artist-led tour of the exhibition on Saturday 2 May, 12-1pm, as part of Hull Open Studios. The exhibition will then continue until 27 June, open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am – 4:30pm.

Danny Bradley needs your support!

The 2015 Joint Honours Philosophy and Creative Writing graduate has been shortlisted for the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting competition. Every year there are tens of thousands of submissions for the award which was set up by Yoko Ono and carries a $20,000 dollar prize.

Recently Danny toured with Fairport Convention and his fantastic song "My Name is Samim" has been shortlisted in the Folk category. You can listen to the song and vote for Danny, the only UK based finalist this year, on the link below.

Katie Marsden is number 14 for the GB Women's Ice Hockey Team and a 2025 Medicine Graduate.

Earlier this month, Katie was a key part of the team that secured the silver medal at the Women’s World Championship Division I Group B in Spain with a final-day 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan. Congratulations to Katie and all the Team GB Women's Ice Hockey team.

Katie continues to balance the demands of elite sport with the responsibilities of a doctor, and in this interview, she reflects on the pivotal moments, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped her path so far.

The University of Hull is seeking donations of pre-loved interview and workwear for our Working Wardrobe event on 8 May.

This initiative supports students by providing free, quality workwear to help them step into their careers with confidence and aid a fair chance of success. Drop donations at the Hubble Centre (Student Central, 1st floor) by 6 May.
