🚀 Great insights this week at the ‘AI for Net Zero, Net Zero for AI’ event! Led by Professor Dhaval Thakker and colleagues from the University of Hull, the discussions at CATCH tackled some of our biggest industrial challenges.

The Humber is a powerhouse for UK ports, logistics, energy, chemicals, and manufacturing. This makes it the perfect real-world testing ground to address two urgent challenges:

🌱 AI for Net Zero: How can AI accelerate industrial decarbonisation across the Humber?

⚡ Net Zero for AI: How do we develop and deploy AI itself in a sustainable, energy-aware way?

The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to explore practical breakthroughs in:

🏭 Industrial decarbonisation & carbon monitoring

⚡ Energy optimisation & smart grids

💧 Hydrogen systems & renewable forecasting

🚢 Green logistics & critical infrastructure

🧠 Energy-efficient AI models & responsible AI

We are delighted to share that one of our collaborative research initiatives, FloodAware, has secured HEIF funding to progress to the next stage of development.

Surface‑water flooding is one of the most challenging forms of flooding to monitor in real time. Traditional approaches rely heavily on sensors or manual checks, which can be slow or limited in coverage. With widespread CCTV infrastructure already in place and rapid advances in AI and machine learning, there is a significant opportunity to improve how communities detect and respond to these events. FloodAware directly addresses this challenge.

The project began as a proof‑of‑concept MSc placement between the DAIM (Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling) University of Hull of Hull and Lampada Digital Solutions Limited. Under the academic supervision of Dr Bhupesh Mishra, MSc Artificial Intelligence and Data Science student Mr Aadesh Pukar Mudvari, and the Lampada Digital Solutions team, investigated whether AI could reliably detect surface‑water flooding using existing CCTV feeds. The early results demonstrated strong technical feasibility and clear potential for real‑world impact.

This initiative also highlights DAIM’s commitment to promoting student engagement in industry‑focused research, giving our learners the opportunity to work on meaningful, applied challenges with external partners. We are proud to see our students contributing to innovation that extends beyond the classroom.

Now a graduand, Aadesh has joined the DAIM team as a Research Assistant, and Dr Mishra is leading the next phase of the project from the University side, continuing our strong collaboration with Lampada Digital Solutions. Together, we are developing a fully functional prototype capable of monitoring live camera feeds, detecting early‑stage flooding automatically, and sending timely alerts with visual evidence to responders.
