Archaeology Festival: Emerging research at the institute - Archaeology Orkney

Some of our PhD students will give presentations on their ongoing research at an event at UHI Orkney on Thursday, September 10, as part of the second OAS Orkney Archaeology Festival.

🌾Building skills for the next generation of agriculture🌾

Some of our agricultural students have successfully completed their Lantra Rough Terrain Telescopic Lift Truck (Novice) course, gaining valuable practical skills and training to support their future careers in the rural sector.

This specific course was provided with funding from the Next Generation Practical Training Fund, which helps:

•Encourage new entrants and the next generation to take up essential training

•Improve access to training for those who may face financial barriers

•Provide flexible, individual approaches to training support

•Strengthen employability and help build a sustainable rural workforce

A fantastic opportunity for our students to develop practical, industry-relevant skills and take another step towards a successful career in agriculture👏🏼

It’s safe to say Jack has had a very busy summer☀️

With our dry stone d**e classes booking up incredibly quickly thanks to high demand, Jack has spent the summer sharing his skills, knowledge and plenty of great humour with everyone who attended.

After such a busy season, it looks like he’s earned a well-deserved rest — although perhaps the wheelbarrow isn’t quite the relaxing spot we had in mind! 😎

A massive thank you to Jack for his hard work, enthusiasm and for helping so many people discover the craft of dry stone walling.

Another great group joined us for our recent dry stone d**e course, with instructor Jack guiding participants through the skills and techniques behind this traditional craft.

Throughout the course, the group gained practical experience in building a dry stone d**e, learning how the careful selection, placement and balance of each stone contributes to the strength and stability of the finished structure.

It was fantastic to see everyone getting stuck in, developing their skills and gaining a real appreciation for the knowledge and craftsmanship involved in dry stone walling👏
