The Young Atheists Research Project

The Young Atheists Research Project Researching the views and experiences of young people aged between 16 and 25 years old in the UK who see themselves as atheists, humanists and/or secularists.

*THIS PROJECT CONCLUDED APRIL 2012*

Dr Rebecca Catto (Principal Investigator) and Dr Janet Eccles (Research Associate) have been gathering the views of young people aged between 16 and 25 years old in the UK who hold atheist, humanist and secularist views and/or engage with atheist, humanist or secularist organisations, such as the British Humanist Association and National Secular Society. The pr

oject will be completed April 2012. Anyone interested in the study should contact Rebecca:[email protected], 01524 510 835. The research, funded by the Jacobs Foundation, who support work on youth and development, will hopefully shed new light on a growing but little understood group. Non-religious beliefs are now protected alongside religion under equality legislation in the UK, but relatively little is understood about their content. We hear a lot about high profile middle aged 'New Atheists' like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, but what about this unheard group? Do they follow Dawkins? Does engagement affect their everyday life? How do they feel about religion?

'I don't do anything because I'm an atheist.' Atheism involves positive as well negative beliefs, but what do you do about it?

19/04/2012

However, negative encounters with particular religious individuals - be they members of the extended family or the Christian Union on campus - formed part of interviewees' stories about their atheism. People disapproved of religion being 'rammed down their throats', with evangelical Christians coming in for particular criticism.
