Academics in Lancaster Environment Centre have been developing sensors that could reveal insights into the secret life of soils! 🪱

The sensors, which are being developed by soil scientists at Lancaster University and researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Manchester, track biological activity in soil by having a degradable substrate that is nibbled on by microbes.

The sensors offer the potential to reveal soil secrets, including how they respond to climate events as well as their important role in storing carbon.

Huge congrats to Professor Paul Taylor of on his receipt of the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to science and technology in policing! 🎉

Professor Taylor is currently the national Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) for Policing. Based at the National Police Chiefs’ Council, his role is to deepen and expand policing’s use of science and technology to prevent crime and keep people safe.

Huge congrats to Professor Kathryn Toghill from Lancaster Uni Chemistry, who was recently awarded a €150k grant to continue her work creating new renewable feedstocks for fuel and chemicals! 🎉

Professor Toghill and her team have been working on ways of making SynGas out of renewable resources rather than traditional fossil fuels, which looks to revolutionise the way we may a range of products!

A reminder that we have Lancaster University's Pride in STEM event at The Gregson Centre on Sunday 7th June from 10am-3pm to celebrate LGBTQ+ contributions to the sciences!

This will be a free event, with family-friendly science-based activities in the Main Hall, including:
🍓 Extract DNA from a strawberry and other fruits!
🌈 Make your own density rainbow
🪴 Explore pH using cabbages
💻 Have a crack at coding with the BBC Micro:Bit
🚗 Build your own hydrogen-powered car
👩‍🔬 Opportunities to meet LGBT+ scientists
🎨 Lots of fun arts and crafts
📖 LGBTQ+ book store
There are also three fabulous flash talks from 1-3pm in the Secret Cinema for those 16+. Talks highlight barriers faced by LGBTQ+ communities in higher education and health settings as well as an exploration of s*x, gender and attraction. The talk element is also free, but please make sure you book your space as there are limited numbers.

Our wonderful spinout Quantum Base is looking for some interns!

Quantum Base is a Lancaster-based deep-tech company developing quantum optical physical unclonable functions (PUFs) for anti-counterfeiting applications - and they're looking for an intern to join their research engineering department!

The job:
⚛ A 3-month paid internship designing and making bespoke scientific instruments.
⚛ Much of this role will involve taking an open-ended scientific question and building the right tools to explore it!

What we're looking for:
⚛ Someone with a background in physics, electronic engineering, computer science (hardware) or material sciences.
⚛ A CV, and a description of a project you have built in your own time, ideally hardware or software.
