Hate Crime Awareness Week (HCAW) 2026 is a UK-wide initiative dedicated to raising awareness, encouraging reporting, and supporting victims of hate crime. HCAW 2026 focuses on the H.O.P.E. Campaign, which emphasises:
H – Hate crime awareness: Educating the public about what constitutes hate crime and its impact on communities.
O – Operational responses: Improving police and community responses to hate crime.
P – Preventing hate crime: Learning from past incidents to implement preventive measures.
E – Engaging communities: Involving local communities in developing strategies to combat hate crime.
The Anchor Anti-racism Group is aware that there has been a rise nationally in the reporting of race-related hate crimes in comparison to last year. This is reflected at a local level across Cumbria and Lancaster. In support of HCAW, the Hate Crime Reporting Flowchart that the group developed in 2025 is hosted alongside helpful information at https://brnw.ch/21x6kW8
Reporting is encouraged, noting that there is a high conviction rate across the regions that the Anchor Anti-racism Group cover. For all hate crime strands, Cumbria conviction rate is 87.1% and Lancashire 86.3%. For racial hate crime, the conviction rates are 81.3% for Cumbria and 86.5% for Lancashire.
As a member of The Anchor Anti-racism Group, we’re also highlighting the great work of Op Hail launches in West Division that began in 2025. https://brnw.ch/21x6kW7
