East Asian Studies at the University of Leeds East Asian Studies in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds. Includes Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Asia Pacific Studies.

The Chinese Studies Department was established at the University of Leeds in 1962, and the first students started in 1963. In 1990, with the introduction of Japanese, it became the Department of East Asian Studies, and in 2003 it was further enlarged by the addition of Asia-Pacific and South-East Asian Studies to become one of the largest and most successful East Asian Studies departments in Europe. Meet our wonderful finalists who reached the finals of the 21st Japanese Speech Contest for University Students at King's College London, on Saturday 7 March. Carol Pui Liu (JH Modern Languages , Level 3) competed as one of the five finalists in the Speech Category, and Ria Kosaka (JH Chinese & Japanese Studies, Level 1) competed as one of the five finalists in the Individual Presentation Category. They both gave excellent presentations - many congratulations to them both!

Prof Fell, our Leeds alumnus, has published a new book! He says 'In the new book on Taiwan's railway history I touch upon how the project started in my language year abroad at Leeds University and the earliest photograph I include in the volume is from that year, May 1990.'
