🎤What a great way to end the week!

We had a superb session today from Matt Porter, the CEO of the PDC, who travelled up to speak to our students on their Business Clinic module. Prior to his current role, in 2006 Matt was appointed as the Chief Executive of Leyton Orient FC (this made him the youngest Chief Executive in English Football, aged 26). Matt was appointed Chairman of Matchroom Multi Sport in 2021.

A super interesting session which brought a valuable and insightful industry perspective on a number of topics including:

🎯The role of the CEO of the Professional Darts Corporation

🎯The growth of darts as a sport - key factors, challenges, global expansion and future directions

🎯Player pathways and development areas (focussing on women's darts, junior darts and educational initiatives)

🎯The importance of the role of Sky and the new rights deal

🎯Digital presence and social media (importance of cross-platform content)

🎯Sponsorship and storytelling by the players

🎯Career advice, top tips and the value of gaining experience

🙏Really fortunate to hear from someone in Matt's position with his vast wealth of knowledge and experience in sport.

✅️Another key take-home point was not to be afraid to make mistakes, or to make decisions that might not work out, but importantly to always own them and then move on 👍

A super way to end the week!

We hope you all enjoyed it Level 5 and Level 6! 👋

"Innovative and interactive start up ideas in sport" - it's our Level 5 Tradeshow! 🥳

💡On Thursday, as part of their Entrepreneurship module, our students took part in a tradeshow to pitch their ideas to fellow students and staff.

💰The module sees the students working as teams to come up with a business idea and through a series of meetings with their mentor, they work to develop this into a saleable proposition that they then exhibit at the tradeshow.

👏Well done to all involved - developing skills, knowledge and understanding in a very practical and engaging way!

It is amazing what you can achieve in 3 years.......👏

🙌 Today, we were delighted to welcome back one of our 2022 graduates who is the Marketing Manager of Hull KR, to deliver a marketing masterclass to our Level 6 students on their Business Clinic projects module. He also met with his project group as Hull KR are a host for 2 of the projects this year!

👊Tom has smashed his career since leaving us and today he delivered a superb session which provided industry insight and top tips, key areas of his role, current club developments and real life examples in a "how to" session - this provided ideas that would benefit our students with their projects as well as being a great help to all the aspiring marketers in the room.

🤓 We learned about the skills required for this role, such as, creative thinking, agility/adaptability, willingness to learn, attention to detail, meeting deadlines, communication, trend aware, leadership and analytical skills and digital literacy to name some - all things we aim to put to the test on this module through the real-world projects.

Tom covered a LOT in the time we had, which included:

📱Digital marketing and social media

🎰The NRL expansion to Las Vegas - packaging an event

🔢Protecting the algorithm

✅Marketing V's Content

🔴 Branding and re-branding - the process of changing the Robins badge - A/B testing

💬Controlling who you are speaking to - knowing your audience

🎬Producing marketing campaigns - "emotion - tagline - storytelling"

🗓 A day in the life - what Tom's week is like

🤔 Challenges - unpredictability, budget, resources

Thank you, Tom, a fantastic learning experience for our students - we are so proud of how successful you have been in a short time - keep it up! 👏👌

📈Our Level 6 Business Clinic module is gathering speed and our consultancy projects are moving forwards 💪.

🙌 Today we welcomed to deliver a session on project management and leadership which provided a number of beneficial pointers, thinking points and tips about working in teams, potential barriers that may arise and how important it is to know what your communication style is in order to work in and lead effective teams (we looked at the  DISC model for this).

👏Big thank you to too who joined us to give some tips from completing her business consultancy project last year on the Business with Digital Marketing programme at LJMU

👌Jess delivered a successful marketing campaign for the Corn Exchange in Manchester based upon developing strategies to increase consumer spending and footfall at Thursday Night Live events

Tips:

👉Audit - Strategy - Concept Development - "You have creative freedom with this project, if you have an idea write it down, then see if you can back it up".

👉Team conflicts may arise - but this can be a positive when it comes to idea generation.

👉Have your campaigns across multiple platforms and touchpoints both on and offline.

👉The world is changing, utilise AI to your benefit but don’t let it replace your own thoughts.

👉Set your KPIs, make your plan actionable, tailor each recommendation to achieving these.

👉Design ideas that create shareable moments.

✅️ One of the best pieces of advice for our current Level 6's starting their projects was to "Treat this project like you are a freelancer working with your first client" - we agree, be creative, be professional, take some risks, and go the extra mile for the client - you never know where this project can lead.

Happy weekend all, week 5 incoming!!! 🙌🏆

📣 Panel Spotlight: Sport, Inclusion & the Future

Last Friday, LJMU Sport Business hosted their fourth annual guest panel exploring protected characteristics in the sport industry to our first year students. The discussion centred on a vital question: Has sport done enough to ensure equity and inclusion?

🎙️ Our incredible panel included:

👉Tim Masih – Sporting Equals
👉Owain Davies – Level Playing Field
👉Caoimhe O'Neill – The Athletic
👉Francis Wight – Mersey Marauders FC

Together, they unpacked:

✅ Strategies sport organisations have used to promote inclusion
✅ Gaps that still exist across the industry
✅ Bold ideas for future progress

From grassroots to elite sport, the message was clear: change is happening, but there's more to do.

💬 Thank you to our speakers for sharing their insights and challenging us to think critically about the future of sport.
