//Call for Participants // Oral history project //
"Men We Seldom See - Irish Migrant Legacies and the British Construction Industry"
Our Dr Barry Hazley and Dr Eleanor Lybeck are inviting people to be interviewed for their oral history study "Men We Seldom See - Irish Migrant Legacies and the British Construction Industry". Supported by The Ireland Funds, the study investigates the neglected social history of Irish migrant workers in the British construction industry between 1945-99.
If you (or anyone you know) migrated from Ireland to England at any point after 1945 and worked in any aspect of the British construction industry (site and office) for at least one year, and are willing to be interviewed for this project or if you have any further questions you might have about the nature of the project, please go to the website https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/irish-studies/research/research-projects/irish-migrant-legacies/ .

🎭BEST PRACTICE🎭

Premiere of a new theatre work by our Dr Lybeck, telling the story of efforts to revive Southport's Wayfarers Arcade.
Originally subtitled ‘A Pantomime for Policymakers’, Best Practice is really a show for anyone who’s ever tried – and quite possibly failed – to make something work. It tells the story of efforts to revive the Wayfarers Arcade, one of the gems of Southport’s Lord Street, and asks the audience to design through serious play a blueprint for the town’s future.

Performed by Seamus Lavan (Lecoq-trained clown) with a company of local young people.

🗓️6:30pm, 19 June

🧭The Engine Room, Wayfarers Arcade, Southport

🎭Play was originally written by Samuel Beckett in English and was first performed (as Spiel) at Theater Ulm in June 1963. The fate of three characters, who find themselves trapped in three urns with only their heads showing, is forever sealed by an affair in the past.

🎭Come and Go is a short play described as a “dramaticule” on its title page. It was written in English in January 1965 and was first performed in German at the Schiller Theater Werkstatt, Berlin in January 1966. Critics consider this one of Beckett’s most “perfect” plays.

Beckett himself proposed the pairing to director Walter D. Asmus in Germany and they presented the double-bill together at the Schiller Theater in West Berlin in 1977.

Performances will be at 7pm on Thursday 17 September, Friday 18 September and Saturday 19 September, with a matinee performance at 1pm on Saturday 19 September.
