We are proud to celebrate the election of Professor Nicola Barker (School of Law) and Dr Olivier Sykes (School of Environmental Sciences) to the prestigious Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship! 🎉

This honour recognises their outstanding contributions to research, excellence, and impact in the social sciences:

🔹 Professor Barker’s internationally recognised work takes a feminist approach to family law and human rights. Her research on diverse family forms, marriage, domestic abuse, assisted reproduction, and LGBT+ rights has influenced legal debates in the UK and globally – including a landmark case at the European Court of Human Rights.

🔹 Dr Sykes’s research explores international and comparative dimensions of urban and territorial planning. His work with local and regional governments, the EU, and professional bodies has shaped policy development, with current research focusing on the impacts of the global sustainability agenda on planning.

They join a Fellowship of over 1,700 leading social scientists elected for their excellence and public impact.

Congratulations to Professor Barker and Dr Sykes on this well-deserved recognition! 👏
