Within our recent CAB applicant survey we wanted to find out why international applicants were focused on studying law in England and Wales. They told us these factors were crucial in their decision-making:

- The reputation of course providers
- The quality of legal education and training
- The international portability of the qualification
- The career prospects in the UK

Cost was also a factor in comparison to other legal jurisdictions.

Those who had researched their options, focusing on qualification routes, course fees, location of provider and study options were best prepared.

For others, they were aware they would have benefitted from doing more research and had been surprised by:

- Course eligibility criteria
- Fees required to study and qualify
- Study and assignment workload expectations during their studies
- Requirements regarding course funding and payment of fees
- Rules around external funding
- Visa requirements and deadline dates
- Course content not aligned to their career goals

LawCAB provides a dedicated section for international applicants, including for those qualified in law in another jurisdiction, along with detailed guidance for any student wanting to gain a postgraduate qualification in law in England and Wales.

Within our recent CAB applicant survey we asked applicants if there was anything they wished they had known before starting their qualification journey.

We had lots of feedback on this question and it was clear that many applicants realised they had not done as much research or started researching early enough to fully understand all the options (career, course, financing, qualification route etc).

One thing we know, good research skills are vital for a career in law, including before you start your career journey.

Take a good look at other applicants' feedback on this topic so you can learn from their feedback and make more informed legal career decisions.

Our recent CAB applicant survey in January asked the question: Why did you choose the institution you chose for your studies?

Here are the top reasons. Would you agree that these factors would or have influenced you in this order?

Top ranked reasons:

1 - Reputation of the course provider
2 - Location of the training course
3 - Cost of the training course
4 - Stipulated by training contract provider

Reputation is unsurprisingly at the top. And reputation based on peer reviews is crucial. Practicalities like where the course is held also strongly dictate applicant choice. Yet we know that cost is also a big decider as courses combined with examination costs are significant.

Always do your research into the course fees, course content, teaching and learning quality, assessment prep support, pastoral support, careers and employability outcomes and peer feedback when making your final decision on where to study.

Following the closure of our recent CAB applicant survey in January - a huge thank you to all of you who responded - we wanted to highlight some of the valuable feedback we received from our applicants.

First up - why study law?

Top reasons (in ranked order):

1 - Range of career options and career progression
2 - To help people
3 - Intellectual stimulation
4 - Financial / earnings potential

While future earnings are clearly important to people when choosing to study law, and for good reason, it is not top of the list. A law qualification continues to offer options for careers both within the legal sector and beyond and is seen as a way to support those in society who need help with legal challenges. Legal studies also demand exceptional minds and those choosing to study law want the intellectual rigour and challenge it brings. https://www.lawcabs.ac.uk/homepage
