Our next online event will be the first of a selection of seminar papers from last year's successful conference in association with the Heythrop Institute on ‘Faith on Failure’, as follows:

Monday 16th February, 13.00-14.00 GMT: Dr Sarah Pawlett Jackson, (University of London): Mapping Phenomenologies of Failure

This paper draws on various resources within the phenomenological tradition and existing philosophical and psychological work on failure to develop and explore three key affective characteristic features of the experience of failure, namely disorientation, waste and shame. This analysis considers the quasi-spatial and temporal qualities of these three dimensions of the experience of failure. It then situates this account of failure in the context of Phenomenology of Religion. The suggestion is offered that the theological virtues of the Christian tradition – faith, hope and love – offer phenomenological counterweights to the experience of disorientation, waste and shame respectively in specific ways.

Please email [email protected] before 10.00 GMT on 16th February to request the joining link.

Why study religion? Well, around 85% of people worldwide have some form of religious affiliation – so religion has a major impact on the wellbeing of our planet and its population. In many cases, that impact is positive. Religion offers meaning, purpose and hope, and provides community and connection. At its best, it drives people to alleviate poverty and promote justice and peace. Sadly, however, its impact is sometimes negative. Misunderstandings and mistaken or competing beliefs can lead to various kinds of conflict, violence, and war. That’s why it matters that people keep trying to understand religion, and, where necessary, to question it.

So, by studying religion, you can think about life’s ‘big questions’ for yourself, take part in the ongoing debate, and, perhaps, use your knowledge to help others in your current or future context.
