Thrilled and humbled to have this timely paper published by Urban Design and Planning Journal by Emerald Publishing entitled, "Design and use of space in refugee camps: a case study of a contested terrain".

This paper explores how refugees in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency) camps – as people with no political identity, very limited political rights and with little certainty about where they will stay – engage in informal placemaking processes to improve the circumstances in which they are forced to live. The importance of this issue is made manifest by the growing number of refugees who find themselves in this position.

This study examines the rapid evolution of urban form through a study of the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan and the enduring importance of Syrian culture in the humanisation of a place within enforced boundaries. This paper illustrates the processes of adaptation and transformation and examines the evolving distribution of space between occupants, the expansion of opportunities for income generation, and the introduction of new housing typologies and services. Early interventions were collectively initiated. Over time, the influence of informal market forces led to those with resources gained ascendancy over those with less.
