⏱️ The countdown is on… The Commonwealth Games gets under way in Glasgow in 50 days, and Britain’s fastest woman – and King’s alum – Dina Asher-Smith (History, 2017) is scheduled to compete. The Olympic, World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games medallist will represent Team England.

The Games begins on 23 July and we’re hoping to see Dina race in:
👟 Women’s 100m final on Tuesday 28 July
👟 Women’s 200m final on Friday 31 July
👟 Women’s 4x100m final on Saturday 1 August

After the Commonwealth Games, the European Athletics Championships starts in Birmingham on 10 August.

It could be a busy summer for Dina and our other high-profile alumni athletes, sprinter Imani-Lara Lansiquot (Psychology, 2020) and 400m runner Laviai Nielsen (Geography, 2018).

On , we're joining all the other pedal-pushing advocates to celebrate how cycling continues to drive health, wellbeing and day-to-day commuting.

It has a role to play in medical innovation, too.

These images from the King’s archive capture early laboratory testing using stationary bikes to help monitor health metrics.

The latest research from King’s College London suggests that artificial intelligence may affect a different part of the workforce than was previously thought.

Rather than focusing on knowledge workers – such as writers, analysts and software developers – it seems that monitoring and control professions – such as power plant operators, railroad conductors and aircraft cargo handling supervisors – may face greater exposure.

The findings echo past automation trends, affecting the middle of the labour market the most. Unpredictable or physical jobs remain more resistant. For now…

‘I hope that in my life so far, I’ve contributed my time to show some kindness and support for the people around me. I also hope I’ve given back to the people I’ve met to help them grow and learn to become better versions of themselves.’

Meet King’s alum Hsien Chih Low (MSci Physiotherapy, 2002), the winner of our Helen Hudson Award in the 2026 King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards.

Hsien Chih Low began his career as a physiotherapist at the National University Hospital in Singapore. After earning an MBA in 2009, he transitioned into healthcare administration.

Alongside this demanding career, he has worked with the King’s College London Alumni Society in Singapore. As president, he led the group and helped create meaningful opportunities for connection and strengthening the King’s graduate community in that country. The Society is also one of our institution’s most engaged volunteer groups and this is hugely down to his inspirational leadership.

Despite stepping down after three years as president in 2024, Hsien Chih Low continues to represent King’s at notable events in Singapore. He recently volunteered as the guest alumni speaker at the Ngee Academy Graduation Celebration, giving a memorable speech to the new graduates and encouraging them to join the Singapore alumni community.

‘My greatest contributions to society so far? Integrating disability equality into education, setting up UK Disability History Month and ensuring inclusive education is central in the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.’

Meet King’s alum Richard Rieser OBE (Geography, 1970), our Alum of the Year in the 2026 King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards.

Richard is the General Secretary of the Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum, the founder of UK Disability History Month, and a globally respected expert in the field of disability equality and inclusion in education.

An activist, advocate and passionate campaigner, he’s spent four decades fighting for the rights of disabled people. He worked as a teacher for the Inner London Education Authority and Advisor for Inclusion in Hackney, and consultant to Comic Relief, Save the Children, the UK Government and the European Union.

Richard was also CEO of the charity, Disability Equality in Education, which trained 150,000 teachers. He now runs the consultancy World of Inclusion.

He spent eight years on the board of the European Disability Forum and he represented the British disability movement at the United Nations.

In the latter role, he helped draft the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This legally binding international treaty was adopted in 2006, and it plays a key role in protecting the dignity, equality and fundamental rights of more than one billion people with disabilities across the globe.

‘At King’s, I learned that meaningful change comes from building power with others, especially those facing injustices. That lesson has guided my work in South London, where I've worked with communities to tackle inequality and drive lasting change.’

Meet King’s alum Pete Brierley (MA Theology & Politics, 2012), the winner of our Local Communities Impact accolade in the 2026 King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards.

Pete is Director at the people-powered community alliance, Citizens UK. He leads on strategy for its London as a Living Wage City campaign and the emerging Southwark Equity Neighbourhood initiative.

He helped pioneer Lewisham’s first Community Land Trust and he was the catalyst for Refugee Welcome groups across South London.

He also co-founded a mental health partnership called South London Listens to co-develop solutions that remove social and economic barriers to good mental health.

‘My greatest contribution so far has been using my research to make a tangible difference in building a better society. That includes shaping public understanding of digital health harms and helping hold powerful technology giants to account for their impact on the world.’

Meet King’s alum Dr Rachael Kent (PhD Culture, Media & Creative Industries, 2019), the winner of our Changemaker accolade in the 2026 King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards.

Rachael is a King’s College London academic and a leading voice on the impact of digital technology on health. She is a consultant, author and podcast host, and her recent work addresses the spread of health misinformation and broader digital harms on social media.

She recently won a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against the technology giant, Apple. Alongside her academic work, she is the founder of Dr Digital Health, through which she advises businesses, the NHS, government and policymakers.
