European Social Survey Keep up to date with news, data releases and analysis posted by the European Social Survey.

The European Social Survey is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ESS ERIC) that provides cross-national data about public attitudes and behaviour. Based at City, University of London, ESS is an academically driven survey using the highest methodological standards. Every two years, up to 40,000 face-to-face interviews are conducted across Europe on a wide range of subjects.

We are delighted to announce the award of a new €3.2m Horizon Europe project to consolidate, modernise and future-proof our survey. The work will include the introduction of new technologies, including AI tools, and efforts to expand our membership amongst non-participating European Union member and candidate countries. Funded by EU Science & Innovation 🇪🇺, ESS-Innovate is a two-and-a-half-year project due to begin on 1 June 2026.

New analysis of our data measuring the political participation of migrants is now available in the European Journal of Political Research (Cambridge Core). Read a summary of the research by Zeynep Mentesoglu Tardivo and Simona Guglielmi (Università degli Studi di Milano 🇮🇹) that was published by The Loop (European Consortium for Political Research 🇬🇧) last week. The analysis compared the likelihood of voting amongst native-born respondents, first- and second- generation immigrants across six rounds of our survey (2010-24).

Panel survey data on climate change, security and defence policies, and mental health and wellbeing is available to view or download. Wave 6 of our self-completion panel survey (ESS-CRONOS-3) was fielded in October and November 2025 in 11 countries as part of the SoGreen project, funded by EU Science & Innovation 🇪🇺. Around half of the questions in this latest wave focused on the green transition, climate change and the environment.

Our next survey methods webinar will focus on rethinking disability measurement in surveys from 12-1pm (BST) on Tuesday 9 June. Laura Tolland (Welsh Government 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿) and Lisa Rutherford (National Centre for Social Research 🇬🇧) will discuss efforts to offer a viable alternative to existing measurements of disability in surveys. The work led to two alternative, but complementary, social model-based definitions of disability to be constructed and measured.

Research that investigated support for far-right political parties published by European Political Science Review (Cambridge Core) included analysis of our data. Raquel Rego (Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa 🇵🇹) and Jeyhun Alizade (WZB Berlin Social Science Center 🇩🇪) assessed the voting patterns of a subset of respondents who are employed by the police or serve in the military. The authors compared the likelihood of these respondents to vote for far-right political parties compared with the general population.

Watch an archived version of last week’s survey methods webinar on measurement error. Barbara Felderer and Lydia Repke (GESIS - Leibniz-Institut für Sozialwissenschaften 🇩🇪) discussed a study that investigated 1,452 estimates of measurement error from large-scale experiments in our survey, covering 24 countries and 21 languages. The findings indicate a positive association between measurement error and representation bias.

Shorter videos about the NextGen Harmonised Data Gateway, developed within the Infra4NextGen project, are also available. Questions about the harmonised data and/or the online training can be asked at an event being held from 11am-12.30pm (CEST) on Tuesday 9 June.
