We were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh to the University of West London on Monday, alongside businesses, community organisations and charities, for the launch of the Ealing SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Partnership Charter and the official completion of our campus transformation programme.

During the visit, The Duchess heard directly from young people with SEND, and employers and local organisations who support people with SEND in education and employment. This was followed by a demonstration of boccia, an accessible Paralympic sport, and a signed dance performance from IMPACT Theatre.

🥁 Celebrating 75 years of steelpan’s global legacy! 🌍

UWL recently hosted the 12th International Conference in Carnival Arts, bringing together academics, performers, students and cultural practitioners from around the world.

Hosted by our London College of Music, the two-day conference celebrated 75 years since Trinidad’s All-Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) introduced the steelpan to the UK, exploring its lasting influence on music, carnival arts and communities worldwide.

Through workshops, performances, panels and exhibitions, the event honoured the pioneers who shaped steelpan’s remarkable journey from Trinidad to London, while inspiring the next generation of artists and practitioners.

New research co-authored by UWL's Dr Roisin Perry has explored whether supporting working memory could help reduce educational attainment gaps between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. 🧠

Analysing data from around 3,000 teenagers across Greater London, the study found that differences in working memory and academic achievement widen between ages 11 and 16. The findings suggest that while classroom support can help, broader socioeconomic investment remains essential for improving educational equality.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is notoriously difficult to treat, but new research led by Professor Richard Morgan, Dean of the School of Medicine and Biosciences, offers a promising way forward. 👏📖

The study found that targeting specific protein interactions with experimental agent HTL-001 can trigger cancer cell death and reduce tumour growth. 🔍🧫
