Forty years ago, one virus got its name.

Today, the fight continues.

In 1986, the international scientific community agreed on the name HIV as the cause of AIDS Four decades later, advances have transformed what was a fatal diagnosis into a manageable long-term condition for many living with HIV.

But improving population health is about more than medical breakthroughs. It means understanding how social, environmental and economic factors shape outcomes, and ensuring progress reaches everyone.

We’re proud to introduce our short documentary, Then, Now, Next, a reflection on 40 years of HIV research through the voices of leading researchers at King’s College London.

Featuring:
• Professor Richard Harding (King's Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care) on tackling the stigma surrounding the HIV epidemic, and expanding access to compassionate, person-centred care worldwide

• Professor Melanie Abas (Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience) on the connection between HIV and mental health, and how communities can come together to support one another

• Professor Michael Malim (King's Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine) on the inspiration behind his work and the importance of continuing to study how the virus behaves

With Special thanks to the teams at Terrence Higgins Trust and the Bishopsgate Institute for their support and for allowing us to feature The Living Will.

As the week draws to a close, we reflect on His Majesty The King’s visit to our Innovation Hub, based at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust’s Cancer Centre.

Scientists from across disciplines at King’s work within the Innovation Hub to embed cutting-edge cancer research and access to clinical trials directly into patient care. Positioned directly above a chemotherapy village the floor below, researchers can analyse patient samples in real-time.

The work at the Hub reflects King’s long-term ambition to accelerate innovation in health and life sciences, as outlined in Strategy 2030.

“It is so important for girls to know there is a space for them in STEM and to give them the chance to find their community." -Dr Kathryn Boast

This week at King's, nearly 100 schoolgirls from across Greater London joined the Department of Engineering and Informatics for the finale of the second Girls Robotics Challenge.

Open to girls between the ages of 12 and 15 from disadvantaged areas of the capital, the challenge is a six-month long programme that pairs students with undergraduate and postgraduate mentors to design and build their own robot – getting hands-on with the basics of engineering and robotics in the process.

In addition to giving the students an opportunity to explore these subjects in a welcoming environment where creativity is rewarded, the project helps tackle the STEM gender imbalance and create a space where young women can confidently see themselves in the field.
