We're pleased to announce that our Outreach and Engagement Grant Scheme is now open to RSB members for 2026 applications!

This grant is exclusively for applications for funding of up to £1,000 to run a citizen science survey, event, or activity. We are looking for projects that will run between 8 October 2026 and 30 May 2027.

These projects should collect data to address clearly defined, engaging, and accessible scientific questions, while promoting public engagement with biology and inspiring audiences through the wonders of biology.

📆 Apply by 6 July 2026

Looking for a free half term activity? Get outdoors with our free Signs of Spring spotter sheet and tick off anything you see!

The spotter sheet shows 10 indicators of spring. You can tick off any that you saw earlier in the year like snowdrops, and head out to look for some of the seasonal signs in nature right now, like dragonflies and bumblebees. Don't forget to then record them in our online survey!

Bees are among the most obvious signs of spring. Their first flights signal that the landscape is waking up and new life is underway. From pollinating wildflowers to supporting the food systems we rely on, bees play a vital role far bigger than their size.

This World Bee Day, take a moment to pause and watch a bee at work. If you spot a bumblebee, share your sighting and help us record how spring is unfolding across the UK 🐝🌼

Add your bumblebee sightings to our survey: www.field-studies-council.org/signs-of-spring/

"Articulating the key roles of plants in the past, present, and future of our planet is a prerequisite to capturing students’ interest and attention"

With the number of students studying plant science declining each year, a community of educators is taking steps to transform the subject into an engaging, modern subject, central to the green jobs of the future. Dr Andrea Paterlini explains more in The Biologist magazine.

What is a scientific hypothesis, really?

In the latest issue of the Journal of Biological Education, this review article shows that biology researchers use and interpret hypotheses in very different ways, yet teaching guidelines rarely reflect this complexity.

Our A to Z of the Biosciences video series aims to inspire future bioscientists, whether they are currently in school, studying at university, or in training. Plant health is often not an obvious career choice for young people, but it is such a diverse field.

From a kelp researcher to a plant biochemist, we've picked out three videos that show how varied plant health can be. Each video has details of the qualifications needed to start a career in the specialism featured, and includes advice for future biologists.
