Institute of Historical Research Library

Institute of Historical Research Library Collection of published historical sources covering Western Europe and its colonial history from the end of the Roman empire to the present.

At the time of its foundation in 1921, the IHR library was conceived as โ€œa workshop for historical researchโ€ where research students would learn to use historical sources in an integrated seminar space. Although the teaching of history has changed, the library continues this source-based approach. Its collection consists mainly of printed primary sources, bibliographies, guides to archives, refere

nce works, edited texts and collections of data such as lists of office holders, along with some relevant modern secondary works. The collection encompasses the historical period from around the middle of the fifth century AD to the present, within subject variations. It covers the history of Western Europe and its expansion overseas from the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Material is acquired in the language of origin, and as a consequence more than half of the collection is in languages other than English. See the collections pages for further information about the library holdings: http://www.history.ac.uk/library/collections. The reference-only library is nationally funded, national in focus and is free to use for staff and postgraduate students of all UK and EU universities. There are now in the region of 170,000 volumes in the entire collection, including both monographs and periodicals.

This Women's History Month and International Women's Day we wanted to highlight one of the most important women in the IHR's own history - Eliza Jeffries Davis. EJD (as she was known to her close friends) was a historian (and librarian!) who played a pivotal role in the founding of the IHR. She was also both an honorary and acting librarian at various points in the early life of the institute. When she passed the IHR was given first pick of her books. However, her roles within the IHR meant that large numbers of books in her collection, especially those on London (the subject of her research), were already featured in the library. Pictured is her copy The Lyfe of Sir Thomas Moore, Knighte, written by William Roper, gifted to her in 1935 by some of her 'fellow - Fellows' at UCL. It is one of the approximately fifty books that came to the library in her bequest.
