★ SOAS Centre for Human Rights Law provides Africa's Regional Human Rights Court with Amicus Re: Elections + COVID-19 ★

The SOAS Centre for Human Rights Law (CHRL) has published an amicus brief it submitted to the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights on holding elections during Covid-19 in Africa. The amicus brief was submitted upon request by the Court to assist it in issuing its Advisory Opinion for the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) regarding 'Guarantees for the Effective Protection of the Right to Participate in Government in Africa, in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Crisis.' The request from PALU provides an important opportunity for the Court to address the many challenges experienced by African states when determining whether to hold elections in the COVID-19 context. 'The amicus addresses concerns raised by either holding elections without putting adequate measures in place or unduly postponing elections, both of which may be incompatible with the right to participate in government', said Lutz Oette, Director of CHRL. The amicus examines relevant practices worldwide, identifies emerging standards and sets out guidance. The amicus has been co-authored by Michelle Staggs Kelsall and Lutz Oette. It has benefited from the superb research and drafting assistance of several SOAS postgraduate students from law and the humanities, namely Marie Balaguy, Sarah Abigail Chaplin, Umran Chowdhury, Nehmat Kaur, Olamide Noah Noah-Fabian, Adithi Shenava, Sanna Ström, Laura Camilla Vialon and Hannah Hailu Zewde.

Muslim Family Law Reform:Pathways to Change

Join SOAS School of Law's Professor Lynn Welchman and an esteemed group of co-panellists as they ask, How can recent reforms of family laws in Muslim contexts provide ideas and strategies that can be used to advance gender justice? Dr. Jouirou, Professor Welchman and Dr. Sharafeldin will explore ways in which contemporary family laws and legal practices have been reformed in recent years to embrace gender equality. They will share examples of different approaches that reformers have taken around specific issues such as domestic violence, polygyny, and inheritance. They will examine some of the contexts and factors that have enabled change, including the interplay between Muslim legal tradition, human rights, state laws and societal norms, and critically assess strengths, remaining gaps, and possibilities for future reform.
