“Presenting our research and networking are vital parts of a PhD at the Bartlett.”

This year more than 90 Bartlett PhD students got the chance to do this when they gathered for the inaugural Bartlett PhD Conference in May.

This student-led initiative gave people the important opportunity to practice showcasing their cutting edge research with peers and experts from across the Bartlett faculty.

"It’s a valuable and golden opportunity to practice your research communication, this is one of the few opportunities to meet people and gain feedback from the experts who understand your research as much as you do".

The conference also had inspiring talks from leading scientists including Professor Alan Penn and Professor Paul Ekins, and a 3-minute thesis competition!

Thank you to all the students who attended and contributed. We look forward to welcoming even more of you to the 2027 Bartlett PhD Conference.

📢 Call for Expressions of Interest: Experiencing the City

**Open exclusively to Bartlett staff and PhD students.**

'Experiencing the City: Imaginative Encounters with Urban Life' invites members of The Bartlett community to contribute imaginative and creative writing on urban life.

Proposed chapters may take many forms: reflective essays, conversations, walks, visual or creative pieces, or hybrid texts that combine analytical, narrative, and sensory approaches. Experiencing the City foregrounds the city as something lived, felt, and negotiated, while opening space for new and imaginative ways of writing urban experience. Rather than prescribing a single format, the book invites contributors to experiment with how urban experience can be written and shared.

Collaborative submissions are encouraged, provided they are led by Bartlett staff or PhD students.

Submissions close: 5pm, Wednesday 30 September 2026

Submit your expression of interest to both Yvonne Rydin ([email protected]) and Michael Short ([email protected]) by the deadline. This should include:

- Your name and role within the Bartlett
- Any co-authors
- The title of your proposed piece
️- Up to 200 words describing the likely content and form
️- Likely word length

🏛️ UCL has celebrated the launch of the book 'University College London: The Bloomsbury Campus', the first comprehensive account of 200 years of UCL’s buildings and the evolution of our Bloomsbury campus, since the university’s foundation in 1826.

Staff, students, alumni and leading figures from the architecture and heritage sectors came together at the Bloomsbury Theatre to celebrate the publication, with the event opening with welcome remarks from our Dean, Professor Jacqui Glass.

Published by UCL Press as part of the renowned Survey of London series, the book explores how UCL’s Bloomsbury estate has evolved alongside changing approaches to education, society and technology.

✨ Faces of UCL: Meet Professor Priti Parikh

From walking through informal settlements in India with her engineer father to becoming a global voice in sustainable infrastructure, equity-driven engineering and inclusive leadership, Professor Priti Parikh’s career has been shaped by a belief that infrastructure can transform lives.

Now Director of The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction UCL and Vice-Dean International at The Bartlett, Priti joined UCL in 2011 as a part-time Teaching Fellow and has since built an international research portfolio focused on equitable infrastructure and sustainability.

Her research has demonstrated the wider economic benefits of investing in basic services, while her work on sanitation, energy access and inclusive infrastructure continues to influence research and industry practice.

As a female Indian engineer working in a sector where women remain underrepresented in senior leadership, Priti is also passionate about creating greater opportunities and challenging structural barriers.

“UCL has given me the platform to go from an engineer to an interdisciplinary scholar, and now to a leader who is motivating and inspiring the next generation of global scientists and leaders.”

✨ Faces of UCL: Meet Tunde Banjoko OBE, transforming lives through opportunity.

Bartlett alumnus Tunde has dedicated his life to widening opportunity and raising aspirations for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

After discovering a passion for helping others early in his career, Tunde founded Making The Leap, a pioneering charity that supports social mobility through youth programmes, the UK Social Mobility Awards and Social Mobility Day.

Studying for an MSc in Urban Regeneration at The Bartlett School of Planning UCL proved to be a pivotal moment.

"UCL was a really important step for me because it helped me realise I was as good as anybody else… I belong and I can do this."

Today, Tunde continues to champion education and opportunity, recognised as a national leader in social mobility.
