St Mellitus College offers context-based theological training rooted in prayer and worship, combining academic excellence, a focus on missional leadership, and the shaping of Christian character. St Mellitus College has now grown to become one of the largest theological colleges in the Anglican Church worldwide, with 210 ordinands in training, and over 650 students taking its programmes. Named aft

er the first Bishop of London, whose territory covered London and Essex, the College was founded in 2007 by the Bishops of London and Chelmsford. It emerged as the coming together of two institutions – North Thames Ministerial Training Course (NTMTC), based in the dioceses of London and Chelmsford, and St Paul’s Theological Centre (SPTC) which grew out of Holy Trinity Brompton. Today, we offer training opportunities in different parts of the country – London, Chelmsford, the North West and the South West. St Mellitus College is dedicated to providing theology in the context of worship, unity and mission, helping Christians explore their faith more deeply, combining academic excellence, a focus on missional leadership, and the flexibility to fit around busy lifestyles.

How does theology shape the world we live in?

At St Mellitus College, we believe theology is for every Christian disciple and for every context. It shapes how we live, work, lead, listen, care, serve, make decisions, and follow Jesus in the places we already are.

Our pioneering context-based training brings together study, worship, formation, and mission to help form theologically confident and committed followers of Jesus. Rooted in Scripture, shaped by worship, and lived out in community, our training helps you deepen your faith, grow in confidence, and be formed for the contexts to which God has called you.

Theology is for every context.

Applications are open for September.

Tuesday morning worship from our South West centre in Plymouth.

‘We do theology in order that we might see God as clearly as we are able, to appreciate his glory, splendour and beauty, and be caught up in the desire to worship him with all our being.”

 — Bishop Graham Tomlin, Generous Orthodoxy: Doing Theology in the Spirit

Our context-based theological training is rooted in prayer and worship. That’s why we begin each day together as a community, lifting our hearts in prayer and worship to God before the teaching begins.

As a studio manager in a luxury watch boutique, Amer’s path to ordination training at St Mellitus College has unfolded in a wonderfully unexpected way.

After a long journey of discernment, he found at St Mellitus a community that recognised his calling, prayed with him, and helped him grow in confidence.

Through worship, formation, academic study, and the support of those around him, Amer has discovered that theology is not simply about gaining knowledge, but about being shaped more deeply in the way of Jesus.

When asked why theological study matters beyond the walls of a college or church, Amer shared,

💬 ‘Studying theology shapes you. It broadens your perspective, sharpens your thinking, and strengthens your convictions. It teaches you to listen carefully to those who hold different views, not so that you are easily swayed, but so that you can understand, engage, and respond with clarity and grace.’

Last night, students, staff, churches, and diocesan partners gathered at Chelmsford Cathedral to give thanks for the life of the Chelmsford Centre, and for all that God has done in and through this community over the years.

It was a joyful evening of fellowship, thanksgiving, and Eucharistic worship, celebrating the students, tutors, placement churches, and diocesan partnerships that have shaped and sustained the life of the centre.

As the Chelmsford Centre comes to a close, we mark this moment with deep gratitude for the past and real hope for the future, giving thanks for the many people whose lives, ministries, and vocations have been formed through this community.

We’ve also included a few photos from over the years at Chelmsford, remembering the people, friendships, worship, and formation that have been part of the centre’s story.

Yesterday, we were privileged to welcome guests to St Mellitus College for the Youthscape / St Mellitus Annual Lecture. The evening was opened by Rachel Gardner (Director of Partnerships at Youthscape), who welcomed guest speaker, Revd Dr Helen Paynter, Director of the Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence.

In her lecture, Dr Paynter explored why this moment is one of real urgency for youth ministry and the wider church, and how young people themselves can become prophetic voices of radical hope in deeply polarised times.

Following the lecture, Helen joined a panel for questions and discussion with Dr Mark Scanlan (Lead Tutor for Future Generations), Alan Moss (Estates Youth Missional Lead for the Diocese of Chelmsford) and Jeronne Rudder (theologian, pastor, and founder of Uhambo The Journey.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for such a vital conversation.

“As soon as I came through the doors, I felt at home.”

Before studying at St Mellitus College, Dan wasn’t sure what his next step should be. He wondered whether theology and ministry were for people more ‘holy’ than him, until he discovered a place where he truly belonged.

As an independent undergraduate student, Dan found a community of hope, care and formation — somewhere he could ask big questions, deepen his faith, and explore how theology connects with everyday life.

Now working as an R.E. teacher, Dan is using his degree to help young people engage with faith, culture and life’s bigger questions.
