🚨ʀᴇᴍɪɴᴅᴇʀ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ꜰᴏʀᴛɴɪɢʜᴛ🚨
Assalamu Alaikum everyone,
The theme of the reminder which I have been asked to write is on Ramadan - the month during which the Holy Qur’an was fully revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). However, if we are to step back and remind ourselves of the month we are currently in - Sha’ban. Sha’ban is a time for us all to prepare ourselves for Ramadan. It’s reported that the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) used to increase his fasting during this month and this month (the Prophet’ month) in which our deeds are increased greatly.
Intrinsically, this is a month in which we should aim to increase our good deeds to help us best during the next month inshallah. Ideally, by being consistent in our actions this can help our Ramadan be easier for us all but most importantly increase our Taqwa inshallah. We should all aim to fast much more during this month (although not the whole month, for that is the month of Ramadan), follow the Sunnah and increase our recitation of the Qur’an (so aiming to recite/memorise the whole Qur’an during Ramadan is not a mere conception of the mind, but a feasible goal for us all inshallah).
Usamah ibn Zayd reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as you fast during Sha’ban.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “It is a month people neglect between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds and I like for my deeds to be raised while I am fasting.” [Sunan An-Nasa’ī]
Ramadan is of course a sacred month for us all - it is a month of sacrifice on so many more facets than simply fasting. It is amongst others increasing our salat, supplications, charity donations, Qur’an recitations but underlying everything increasing our taqwa and our own personal bond with Allah (S.W.T). We all have our personal goals we wish to strive for (Islamic, academic and personal), but let this month be a month of reflection for us - an invaluable opportunity to develop ourselves from an Islamic standpoint principally and thus act as a guiding light in our other daily activities. We should all use the blessings of this month to strengthen our relationship with Allah, our iman, however, most importantly as a chance to develop after Ramadan too. Ramadan should be a stepping stone to our own personal development as Muslims and we should all aim to inshallah to leave sinful habits behind.
Rewards are plentiful during this blessed month, as the following Hadith depicts:
The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said: “When Ramadan arrives, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of hell are locked up and devils are put in chains." [Sahih al-Bukhari 1899]
As I started this talk, I mentioned that Sha’ban is a month to help us prepare for Ramadan. After Ramadan, fasting the 6 days of Shawwal (after the month of Ramadan) is also noted to bring huge blessings as goes the following Hadith:
The Prophet (S.A.W) said: “The fast of Ramadan is like observing 10 months of fasting. Fasting six days of Shawwal is like observing two months of fasting. This together is like fasting throughout the year.” (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah)
I hope therefore that my message that we should not think of Ramadan as a one-stop shop that comes on an annual basis. We have been presented with such amazing opportunities to increase our thawab and good deeds multiform in the presence of such a short amount of time. We must strive to use these blessed days coming up to be wise maintain our good deeds throughout the days, months and years to come inshallah.
'The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur'an was revealed as guidance for mankind, and as clear signs that show the right way and distinguish between right and wrong. So those of you who witness the month must fast in it. But the one who is sick, or is on a journey (should fast) as much from other days (as he missed). Allah intends (to provide) ease for you and does not intend (to create) hardship for you. All this is so that you may complete the number (of fasts as prescribed) and proclaim the Takbir of Allah for having guided you, and (so) that you may be grateful.'
