Our flagship International Trauma Conference returns to Imperial College London for its 19th year on 2nd-3rd November. ICSM Surgical Society was set up to bring you closer to extracurricular surgical training. Founded in 2005, we are part of Imperial College School of Medicine Union, winner of Imperial College Union President's Award 2008 and are affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons of Engl

🚨 We are delighted to introduce Dr. Helgi Jóhannsson as a speaker for ! 🚨

Dr. Jóhannsson, originally from Iceland, completed his medical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and has since become a consultant at St Mary’s Hospital. He has a wealth of clinical interests including trauma, esophagogastric surgery, and general anaesthesia.

As the former clinical director of anaesthesia at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and current Vice President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, his leadership in the field is exemplary. Dr. Jóhannsson is also deeply passionate about education, social media in medicine.

🚨 We are delighted to introduce Mrs. Elizabeth Yeung as a speaker for ! 🚨

Mrs. Yeung is a highly respected Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital. Originally from the Midlands, she began her academic journey at St Andrews University with a Biochemistry BSc, followed by a medical degree at Barts and the London, and a BDS degree at King’s College London.

An active member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS), Mrs. Yeung was elected as a lead for the “Emerging Leader” programme in 2023, championing diversity and inclusion in the surgical workforce. Her dedication to medical education is evident through her leadership in various OMF courses, including her recent collaboration with the Griffin Institute on a Craniofacial Trauma programme.

As a notable researcher, she has published over 30 papers with hundreds of citations to her name. We are thrilled to host Mrs. Elizabeth Yeung at our 2024 “Frontiers in Trauma” Conference!

🚨 We are delighted to introduce Dr. Reuven Jacks as a speaker for ! 🚨

Dr. Jacks is a registered Sub-Specialist in Trauma Surgery and currently serves as the Deputy Head of the Trauma Unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Originally from Johannesburg, he graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1998 after attending Rabbinical College.

After completing his internship and community service in Johannesburg, Dr. Jacks worked in HEMS and aviation medicine for two years, followed by a year practicing emergency medicine in the UK. He qualified as a general surgeon in 2010 and then pursued a sub-specialty in Trauma Surgery.

In addition to his role at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, he is the medical director of Hatzolah Ambulance Service. Dr. Jacks has a particular interest in Paediatric Trauma, along with additional focuses in Pre-hospital Medicine and Trauma Laparoscopy.

🌍 Imperial College Surgical Society invites abstract submissions for the Prof. Kenneth D Boffard Poster Competition at The International Trauma Conference! 🩺

👀 The topic must be clearly related to trauma 2024, but can be from any discipline. The abstract must not be more than 250 words, but this does not include the title, names of authors, acknowledgments or references. 📑

📧 Email your submissions to [email protected] with the subject ‘Trauma 2024 Poster Competition’ by 23:59 Wednesday 30th October. Outcomes of shortlisting will be sent out on 31st October 🗓️

🗣️ Shortlisted abstracts will be invited to present posters, which will be judged by our Esteemed Patron and associated colleagues on Saturday, 2nd November 2024. The best posters will win prize vouchers, so don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity! 🏆

🚨 We are thrilled to introduce Major Max Marsden as a speaker for ! 🚨

Major Marsden is an Imperial College School of Medicine graduate with a PhD in Trauma Sciences from Queen Mary University of London. Currently, he serves as a General Surgeon in London and is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Centre for Trauma Sciences and the Defence Medical Services.

His passion for trauma surgery ignited during a medical school elective with the MEDStar Trauma Team in Washington, DC. After completing foundation training at Frimley Park and attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2012.

In 2020, he completed his groundbreaking PhD, investigating the impact of an artificial intelligence system on clinical decision-making after injury. Notably, he made history as the first UK winner of the American College of Surgeons Resident Trauma Papers Competition in 2021 for his pivotal paper on trauma laparotomy.

As a founding member of NaTRIC, Mr. Marsden has significantly contributed to enhancing trauma care through comprehensive audits and leading national trauma research initiatives. We are excited to welcome him as a guest speaker at ‘Frontiers in Trauma’!

Mr. Kevin Tsang is a Consultant Craniofacial, Trauma, and Neurosurgeon, and Head of Service for Major Trauma at Imperial College London. He specialises in craniofacial and spinal trauma, complex spinal disorders, and cerebrospinal (CS) conditions, including endoscopic ventricular surgery.

With a medical degree from King’s College London and advanced neurosurgical training across London, Cambridge, Oxford, Plymouth, and Bristol, Mr. Tsang is a leader in his field. He previously served as Trauma Surgeon for the FIA in the UAE and is a Committee Member of the SAC panel overseeing neurosurgery training in the UK, where he currently serves as Quality Assurance Lead.

Mr. Tsang’s humanitarian work with the Facing the World Charity in Vietnam, providing reconstructive surgeries for children, further highlights his dedication to global healthcare.
