A day late, but still worth celebrating; yesterday was International Procurement Day.

I was travelling to Crete, which gave me a bit of time to reflect on just how much this profession has shaped my career.

Procurement is often misunderstood. It’s not just about cost, process, or compliance; it’s about creating value. We enable organisations to deliver, we support our stakeholders to achieve their objectives, and we connect markets, suppliers, and innovation in a way that drives real outcomes.

When I look back at my own journey, it started with buying cakes… and today I’m working across complex construction and infrastructure programmes. Every category, every organisation, every project has added another layer of experience, building skills on top of skills.

That’s what I love about procurement. You’re never limited to one path. You don’t have to stay in the same sector, category, or role forever. The fundamentals travel with you, commercial thinking, stakeholder engagement, negotiation, risk management; but the context is always evolving.

And I know there are still skills I haven’t discovered yet. That’s the exciting part.

Procurement rewards curiosity. It rewards those who are willing to keep learning, to adapt, and to step into new environments.

So whether you’re just starting out or years into your career, stay curious, keep developing, and embrace the variety this profession offers.
