LSEE - Research on South Eastern Europe

LSEE - Research on South Eastern Europe Research Department, London School of Economics

LSEE is a research unit established within LSE's European Institute with the aim of developing the School's expertise on South East Europe. Drawing on the strength of existing and new academic expertise at the LSE, and complementing the work of the Hellenic Observatory and the Contemporary Turkish Studies Programme, LSEE aims to provide a significant platform on which to build high quality, indepe

ndent research and facilitate public dialogue and dissemination of information on the region. Research at LSEE is organised along three broad themes covering (a) Social policy, regional policy and labour markets; (b) European integration, macroeconomic policy and institutional reform; and (c) International relations, minorities, security and state-building. LSEE aims to provide a forum for research collaboration across these thematic areas not only within the LSE and the UK, but also with external partners in South East Europe and beyond. Under this aegis, LSEE organises a series of public lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences, both at the LSE and in the region.

Social media is the new battleground of identity politics. It is where old conflicts are played out, reconfigured or intensified, and where new contentions emerge. Although digital interactions cross borders, they also redraw and reinforce both old and new symbolic boundaries. What happens when legacies of violence are confronted online? What power do online content creators and debaters wield? How do the technical architecture and design of platforms shape the political, social, and cultural impact of online debates? When do these platforms divide or unite, and under what conditions? The panellists explore these questions, challenging the familiar narratives of polarisation and echo chambers that dominate discourse around social media.
