SOAS University of London

SOAS University of London SOAS is a remarkable institution, uniquely combining language, disciplinary expertise and regional focus.

We are distinctively positioned to analyse some of the most challenging issues facing the world today. Celebrating 100 years of research and teaching excellence SOAS’s world class scholars are well-placed to provide the analysis and understanding of our rapidly changing world. Our programmes are taught by respected specialists engaged in fieldwork and research which influence government policy and

the lives of individuals across the globe. SOAS scholars grapple with the pressing issues confronting two-thirds of humankind today: democracy, development, economy, finance and public policy, human rights, migration, identity, legal systems, poverty, religion, and social change. From day one at our central London campus, our students are encouraged to challenge conventional views and think globally – and that’s one of the reasons why they develop careers that make a real difference. A SOAS student is typically passionate about their subject; opts to learn a second language; loves to learn, to travel, to be surprised; and is interested and engaged with the world around them.

Great news!👏We have been awarded a major grant from Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council to strengthen our world leading Taiwan Studies programme.

New scholarship opportunities, a visiting scholar programme and funding for students to attend conferences and conduct research fieldwork in Taiwan have been funded by this grant.

Professor Dafydd Fell, Director of the SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies, said: “This grant will provide, for the first time, scholarships for our MA Taiwan Studies degree programme where the recipients will become active participants in our research and events activities.

"The visiting scholar programme will allow leading Taiwan scholars to spend longer periods in London to share their research and engage with our students and academics.

"This is a transformative development for our Taiwan Studies Programme and we are incredibly grateful to Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council for their support.”

See the comments section to learn more - the scholarship opportunity is open for applications - deadline 17 June.

As the US-Iran war continues, one of the world's most critical oil routes remains under threat. The Strait of Hormuz carries around one-fifth of the world's seaborne oil and right now, Iran is exercising control over it.

The instinct may be to reach for a military solution. But three SOAS economists argue that would be a mistake.

Their proposal is economic, not military. A regional framework, involving Iran, Iraq and the Gulf states, could share that burden more fairly and reduce dependence on any single external power.

Costs shared. Dependencies reduced. Long-term stability improved. Can the politics allow it?

The books the powerful don’t want you to read. Professor Daniela Gabor’s 3 books to understand the world: Paulo Freire on why education is political. Octavia Butler on what collapse actually looks like. Hettie O’Brien on how Wall Street owns everything including your public services.
What would you add?

"I began to realise that beneath every policy decision lies a set of moral assumptions, often left unstated."

When SOAS student Siddhant chose to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE), he was looking for more than a prestigious degree. He wanted to think across disciplines - to move beyond what works and ask who it works for, why it works, and at what cost.

What he didn't expect was that philosophy, the subject he came to last, would end up shaping his thinking the most.

"PPE hasn't simplified the world for me. It has made it more complex, but also more intelligible."

Read more about Siddhant's experience studying PPE at SOAS in the comments below.
