The Functional Imaging Laboratory (FIL) was founded in 1994 following a major grant award from the Wellcome Trust. This provided for a new building, capital equipment and core staff support. The award enabled a core group of scientists led by Richard Frackowiak, then based in the Medical Research Council Cyclotron Unit at the Hammersmith Hospital, to relocate to a central London site, within UCL.

In 1994 the principal neuroimaging research tool was Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Over the next decade functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) became the dominant investigative tool of the FIL, leading to PET decommissioning in 2004. The laboratory continued to enjoy core Wellcome Trust infrastructure support through major grant awards in 1999 and 2004. In 2006, following a successful bid for a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award the laboratory was awarded Wellcome Trust Centre status, and is now known as the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL. Centre status was renewed following a further successful Strategic Award in 2011. The founding Director was Ray Dolan with Karl Friston as Scientific Director. Currently, the investigative infrastructure of the laboratory includes structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magneto-encephalography (MEG), electro-encephalography (EEG), and neuropsychological and behavioural testing. The WTCN is also the home of SPM, a leading statistical software for the analysis of neuroimaging data.

Over the Summer, the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging welcomed two talented A Level students for a two-week placement.

Each student was matched with a PhD student mentor, who supported them to produce a report including a literature review and data analysis.

Find out how Hamida, one of the students who took part, got along in the ARM lab with her mentor, Jenny Lee.

We are delighted to announce that UCL World Stroke Day Forum will return on Monday 25th to Friday 29th October!

Now in its 4th year, the Forum aims to empower stroke survivors and their loved ones to contribute to research & rehabilitation at University College London.

Building on the success of last year, the 2021 Forum will again take place entirely online with a series of interactive, digital sessions.

This year, we have set up a new, dedicated page.
Please 'Like' the page at UCL World Stroke Day Forum to get regular updates and connect with other attendees and contributors.

At the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, lots of our research relies on volunteers visiting the Centre for scans.

In Understanding MRI, we worked alongside study participants to address their biggest questions and alleviate anxieties surrounding going for an MRI brain scan.

This project was a collaboration between researchers, research volunteers, technicians, an illustrator, and the Centre’s Public Engagement team, to co-produce an animation which answered volunteers’ most popular question: what is functional MRI?

The Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging at UCL is currently recruiting for a number of non-invasive brain imaging studies.🧠

We are looking for a mixture of healthy adults and people with specific conditions to take part. There are many different studies all with a different focus, and several are paid or offer reimbursement.

If you’d like to help us better understand the functions of the human brain and improve the lives of people with psychological and neurological conditions, you can find more information at https://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/about/visitor-and-participant-information/
