📢 1 DAY to go - Cosmic UCL (Tomorrow - Wednesday 6 May 2026)

The countdown is moving fast! In just around 24 hours, we’re bringing you a marvellous mash-up of science, comedy, and music. As we prepare to take over the Bloomsbury Theatre for the celebrations, the final pieces of our "marvellous mash-up" are falling into place. In the second part of our speaker series, we are delighted to highlight the remaining stars joining our host, Helen Czerski:

[Three Minute Thesis Competition Recap]

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition that challenges PhD students to describe their research within 3 minutes to a general audience, using just one PowerPoint slide and no additional props or electronic media. 3MT celebrates the discoveries made by research students and encourages them to communicate the importance of their research to the broader community.

This year, we had 6 amazing PhD student and postdoc presenters within UCL Mechanical Engineering with topics ranging from brain, laser eye surgery and knee MRI!

🥇 1st place: Maryame Boutkhil ("Laser eye surgery: It works, but have we been doing it blind?")
🥈 2nd place: Andrew Keenlyside ("The Brain-Wide Web")
🥉 3rd place: Rafizul Md ("Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion: Device Selection")

Congratulations to Maryame and Andrew, who will now progress to the Faculty-level competition!

And a huge congratulations to all the presenters – we learned so much from your fascinating research👏

👀 Interested in engineering, startups or deep-tech? Got an idea that could change the world? Or curious how research becomes real-world tech?

Don’t miss our Inaugural Kennedy Lecture 2026!

This year’s speaker, Dr Andrew Lynn FREng, has spent 20+ years building deep-tech & life-science startups - raising $60M+, navigating failures, and leading multiple companies to successful exits. Now he’s sharing what actually happens behind the scenes 👀

💡 Expect real talk on:
• Why startup journeys are never linear
• What makes a technology “good enough”
• How to survive (and succeed) in a tough funding climate
• Lessons from both wins and failures

📅 Wednesday 25 March
📍 Roberts Engineering Building, LT106
🥂 Followed by a canape and drinks reception

Whether you’re into engineering, startups, or just figuring out your next step - this could be for you!

Last Wednesday, 30 lucky MechEng students and staff had a chance to visit UCL Astronomical Observatory in Mill Hill, part of UCL Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences 🔭 This is one of the best-equipped astronomical facilities for student training and research in the UK, offering state-of-the-art equipment for student training and cutting-edge research in astronomy ✨

We were very lucky to have expert and fun guided tours around the amazing facility which holds an array of telescopes and other astronomy technology.

As we were blessed with incredibly clear skies, our staff and students were able to observe planets and other stellar objects through the powerful telescopes. A few students even spotted Jupiter and Uranus, and everyone got an amazing view of the Moon! Thank you to our wonderful guides from UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy - and look out for future events and opportunities to get involved 😍

UCL MechEng student project highlight 👇

Project MARIS is a capstone initiative at UCL Mechanical Engineering developing a low-cost autonomous underwater glider for aquatic and climate research. This year, our team of eight MEng Mechanical Engineering students is advancing the glider prototype to Technology Readiness Level 7, with the long-term goal of under-ice deployment in areas often inaccessible to crewed platforms due to dense and hazardous ice coverage.

The RS Student Fund support will directly help develop MARIS’ 2nd generation hydraulic buoyancy system and pitch & roll mechanism by funding key hardware for hydrostatic testing and open-water validation, including shaft couplers, sensors, and switches from the RS catalogue. MARIS is fully buoyancy-driven, modular, and designed for iterative upgrades across future cohorts, helping us build a quieter platform for climate research, noise pollution studies, and wildlife monitoring.

Thank you to RS for supporting student-led engineering and ocean innovation!

Last Thursday (12 Feb), MechEng students and staff came together to celebrate the Year of the Horse, filling the UCL Engineering Cafe with music, stories and great food 🐎✨

With performances from global percussionist and her incredible quartet, followed by the powerful voices of ’s 30‑person choir (the largest Chinese choir in the UK!), the evening brought music, culture and the whole UCL MechEng community together.

We enjoyed snacks, drinks and dishes from across different countries that celebrate Lunar New Year — including China, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore and more — and heard fascinating stories from our very own staff and students about they celebrate the occasion in their countries.

Huge thank you to everyone who joined us, performed, volunteered, or simply came along to be part of the celebration.

Wishing you a prosperous, joyful and spirited Year of the Horse ✨🧧
