The LSESU Music Society is one of the largest societies at the LSE, with its 400 members. Winning Gold STARS award for 3 years in a row, we are one of the most active societies on campus. Catering for a range of tastes from rock to baroque, the Music Society arranges jazz evenings, trips to concerts, open-mic nights and even boat trips -- these are just come of the exciting and well-received event

s we’ve held in the past. We pride ourselves on having a great presence among current students as well as alumni and School staff, embracing a greater diversity than any other society on campus. We also collaborate extensively with other societies such as the Drama Society and their outstanding performances or the China Development Society for the ‘East vs West Music Competition’. Our main groups are the LSE Choir and LSE Orchestra, but there are countless other smaller ensembles including the Houghtones and RogueNotes -- our two A Cappella groups -- the Jazz Band, and many more. As a member you will gain discounted tickets to our events as well as the rights to book the two Music Practice Rooms. Welcome back from reading week, hope everyone had a good time off work! 🛏 Regardless of how relaxed you were, this week we have Bukolika Piano Trio bringing you an exciting program featuring Debussy's, Haydn's and Frank Martin's piano trios! Come on down to the Shaw library on Thursday for a relaxing afternoon full of wonderful music performed by these amazing musicians. 🎶

As one of the leading ensembles of their generation, the Bukolika Piano Trio is recognized for their intensely expressive music making, personal character of playing and exceptional virtuosity. Established in 2014, the trio has performed in major venues in the UK (including Wigmore Hall and St Martin-in-the Fields) as well as leading concert halls around Europe.

Since having been selected for the St John's Smith Square Young Artists Scheme, the Trio has been a regular guest on BBC Radio 3 and made their appearance on London TV. They regularly give masterclasses and perform at music festivals. They were chamber coaches at the Dartington Summer School and Festival in years 2016-2019 and were selected to participate in the prestigious Britten-Pears residency programme in 2020.

Welcome back to our sixth lunchtime concert of the 2022 season during reading week! This time, we have the distinguished Ferio Saxophone Quartet bringing you an exciting program featuring transcriptions of various masterpieces throughout the ages! Come on down to the Shaw library on Thursday for a relaxing afternoon full of wonderful music and good company for an hour of rest and reprieve.

Winners of The Philharmonia/Martin Musical Ensemble Award winners of the Royal Over-Seas League’s Ensemble Competition in 2015, the Ferio Saxophone Quartet are one of the leading British saxophone quartets among the new generation of artists, consistently receiving a highly enthusiastic reception from audiences and critics alike.
The Ferio Saxophone Quartet has performed at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, Conway Hall, Cambridge Summer Festival and the Three Choirs Festival, and has given concert tours in Scotland and the Channel Islands. They have also played at the Bermuda, Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton, Newbury, Machynlleth, North Norfolk and Petworth Festivals. In November 2017 the quartet travelled to New Zealand giving concerts organised by the Royal Over-Seas League where they also joined the panel of adjudicators for the Pettman/ROSL Arts Scholarship auditions. The ensemble was a St John’s Smith Square Young Artist 2016-2017; during the course of the year this scheme involved Ferio in a number of projects focusing on marketing, commissioning and outreach work in addition to a series of concerts.

Welcome back to our fifth lunchtime concert of the 2022 season! This week, we have the distinguished Ariel Lanyi (piano) bringing you an exciting program featuring Schumann's Kinderszenen and Albeniz's Iberia! Come on down to the Shaw library on Thursday for a relaxing afternoon full of wonderful music and good company for an hour of rest and reprieve.

Winner of third prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2021, and prize winner in the inaugural Young Classical Artists Trust (London) and Concert Artists Guild (New York) International Auditions, Ariel Lanyi's playing has been described as possessing an "innate intelligence and a sense of flawless rhythm" (John Bell Young).

Over the last few years, Lanyi has made his debut at Wigmore Hall and participated in the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, alongside renowned artists such as Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss. His recording of music by Schubert for Linn Records was released, and he gave live concerts (for release online) for the Vancouver Recital Society in Canada and the Banco de la República in Colombia. As a soloist he performed Brahms Concerto No.2 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as Beethoven’s Concerto No.2 at the Royal Academy of Music. Lanyi has performed widely in Europe, with previous highlights including recitals at the deSingel Arts Centre in Antwerp (stepping in for Till Fellner), Salle Cortot in Paris, and a performance of Mozart’s Concerto, K.491 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Conductors whom he has in the past collaborated with include Yi-An Xu, Peter Whelan, Andrew Manze, and Trevor Pinnock. He regularly appears in concerts broadcast live on Israeli radio and television and on Radio France. In 2012 he released Romantic Profiles on LYTE records, an album featuring music by Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, and Janáček. Ariel is a Countess of Munster Recital Scheme Artist.

Welcome back to our forth lunchtime concert of the 2022 season! This week, we have Jamal Aliyev (cello) and Maria Tarasewicz (piano) bringing you an exciting program featuring Chopin's cello sonata and Martinů Variations on a Theme of Rossini, H.290! Come on down to the Shaw library on Thursday for a relaxing afternoon full of wonderful music performed by these amazing musicians:

Azerbaijani cellist, Jamal Aliyev, is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after performers of his generation. In 2017 he made his solo debut at the BBC Proms with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, performing for John Williams’ 85th Birthday. In the same year he won the ‘Arts Club – Sir Karl Jenkins Music Award’ and released his debut CD Russian Masters with pianist Anna Fedorova for Champs Hill Records to critical acclaim. Maria Tarasewicz has gained an international reputation as a chamber musician, duo partner, and a pedagogue, appearing regularly on BBC Radio 3.
Aliyev has performed widely internationally, highlights including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (broadcast by Radio 3), the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, the Presidential Symphony Orchestra in Turkey, CBSO at the Royal Albert Hall, Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra in Venezuela, and Tomsk Philharmonia at the Trans-Siberian Festival. In 2021 he was featured as one of Classic FM’s "30 of the most brilliant young classical musicians playing today".
Tarasewicz is committed to working with and developing younger artists, and invitations not only as a performer but also as a teacher and accompanist have taken her to Norway, Belgium, France, Italy, Jersey, San Marino, Poland, China, and several UK festivals and masterclasses. She has performed in all of London’s major concert venues, including Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and the Royal Festival Hall Purcell Room.

Welcome back to another lunchtime concert! This week we have Boris Bizjak and Marcelle Zahra bringing us a delightful collection of pieces on the flute and piano!

Praised for his "freshness and originality" (Gramophone), Boris Bizjak is a Slovenian flautist who has won both 1st and 2nd prize at the European Flute Competition in Picardy, France. He was regularly a top prize winner as a soloist and chamber musician at the Slovenian National competition. Marcelle Zahra has been described as “naturally musical with a probing intelligence”, and has been heard in concert venues throughout the United Kingdom as well as USA, Italy, and Malta.

Boris performs as a soloist and chamber musician in Slovenia, Great Britain, the United States, Japan, China, France, Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Cyprus and Malta. He has performed concertos with the Slovenian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra on a number of occasions; in 2015 he performed Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp, in 2017 the CPE Bach flute concerto under the baton of Dmitri Sitkovetsky, in 2018 the Brandenburg Concerto and the triple concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord in a minor by J.S.Bach. He has also performed as a soloist with the City of London Ensemble, Euphonia Symphony Orchestra, Solisti Divini, London Brandenburg Soloists and SNG Maribor.

Past performances by Marcelle Zahra include a BBC broadcast of newly discovered folk song arrangements by Beethoven (Edinburgh) and solo performances at the Queens Hall (Edinburgh), Teatro Luigi Mercantini (Italy), Central Washington University Recital Hall (Seattle), Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), Blackheath Halls (London) Haydn Festival Trinity Laban (London) and Malta Arts Festival (Valletta). Zahra graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London in 2009 with a Master of Music Degree, studying with Philip Fowke and Alexander Ardakov.

The requiem is an especially ambitious work of an ethereal quality, everyone is welcomed to join in the rehearsals so do come and/or bring a friend!

Welcome back to our second week of lunchtime concerts where we bring to you an exciting programme featuring the Van Baerle Trio!

Already established with an international reputation, the Van Baerle Trio have been awarded top prizes at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 2013, the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition in 2011, as well as receiving the audience prize at both contests and winning the Kersjes Prize in 2012, the highest chamber music award in the Netherlands.

The Van Baerle Trio was founded in 2004 by pianist Hannes Minnaar, violinist Maria Milstein, and cellist Gideon den Herder. It was formed under the guidance of Dmitri Ferschtman and received lessons from Ferenc Rados and Claus-Christian Schuster, among others. After winning the 2011 Vriendenkrans Competition in the Concertgebouw and performing there on numerous occasions since, the Van Baerle Trio was promoted by the Concertgebouw as ECHO Rising Stars 2013/14, a tour which took the trio to major venues across Europe, including Vienna‘s Musikverein, the London Barbican, Cité de la Musique in Paris, L‘Auditori in Barcelona and the Philharmonie in Cologne. The Trio’s highly praised discography features a debut CD of works by Saint-Saëns, Loevendie, and Ravel, which received an Edison Award in 2013. This was followed by an album dedicated to Mendelssohn’s piano trios, including the world premiere recording of the early version of his Piano Trio in D minor. Most recently the trio has recorded all the Beethoven piano trios, with the final disc, the Triple Concerto with the Residentie Orkest The Hague under the baton of Jan Willem de Vriend, released in Spring 2020.
