UCL Laws recently marked two centuries of leadership in expanding women’s access to legal education with a powerful International Women’s Day event that brought together a distinguished panel of inspiring practitioners and academics. ⚖️ 🎓

A huge thank you to our panellists – Laura Devine, Professor Dame Hazel Genn, Baroness Hale of Richmond, Dee Masters, Professor Dawn Oliver, and Toni Williams – for sharing their experiences, including the progress that has been made and the structural barriers that remain.

And thank you to our chairs and co-organisers, UCL Laws’ Alison Diduck (Professor of Law) and Virginia Mantouvalou (Professor of Human Rights and Labour Law, and Co-Director of the UCL Institute for Human Rights), for guiding such powerful reflections. 💡

Professor Graham Penn introduces the intellectual foundations of the MSc Law and Finance at our upcoming in-person Open Day on 4 March! ⚖️📊

At the event, Graham will explore how legal, financial, and regulatory thinking intersect in the global corporate and finance world, which is a central question that shapes the structure of the degree from the very beginning.

This matters now because employers increasingly look for graduates who can navigate complex transactions, regulation, and markets with both legal precision and financial insight . The MSc is designed to reflect that professional reality, combining academic depth with applied learning, including placements and real-world deal simulations developed with leading firms 💼 🌐

Join us on 4 March to meet Professor Penn, academic colleagues, professional services staff, and current students, and to learn more about studying at UCL Laws and the MSc Law and Finance.

Last week, the UCL Global Centre for Democratic Constitutionalism (GCDC) at UCL Laws launched its new speaker series, The State of the United States, with a rare public appearance by Jack Smith, former US Justice Department Special Counsel — in conversation with Professor Andrew Weissmann (NYU and GCDC Sidney Distinguished Visitor).

Speaking at the event, Smith defended the integrity of federal investigations into former President Donald Trump, rejecting claims of political bias and calling for renewed commitment to impartiality, integrity, and public service.

Led by Professor Erin Delaney, the GCDC series brings leading US experts to UCL to explore pressing questions about democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law in today’s turbulent political climate.

UCL has been rated as a leading university for knowledge exchange for the fifth year in a row in Research England’s Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF). 🏆

The KEF is an annual framework which assesses how universities are performing in activities that positively impact the economy and wider society. It highlights how universities are collaborating with external organisations, supporting local communities and helping to launch new ventures across the UK.

💬 Professor Geraint Rees, UCL’s Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement), said: “It’s fantastic to see our work in everything from new cancer therapies to quantum technology being recognised in this year’s KEF.

These results show the real value of universities like UCL working side by side with business, government, the NHS and the public to translate ideas into real-world impact. By building these partnerships, we not only deliver breakthroughs that change lives but also help ensure the UK remains a global leader in innovation.”
