How important are the arts for our health?

Professor Daisy Fancourt’s research shows how engaging in the arts can increase wellbeing, reduce stress, and support both mental and physical health.

The evidence is growing: arts engagement deserves to be recognised alongside other pillars of health, such as physical activity, diet and sleep.

As part of UCL200, we’re shining a light on research shaping healthier futures for all.

In Series 2 of The Bridge, we take on some of the most complex and often divisive topics shaping our world today - from Brexit, to AI in education, asylum seekers, net zero, international students, and populism.

These aren’t easy conversations, but that’s the point.

As part of the Disagreeing Well campaign, The Bridge is about understanding differences and modelling respectful, informed disagreement.

Listen to our latest episodes: 'Should the UK cap international student numbers?' with Jamie Arrowsmith and Jonathan Thomas and 'Is AI destroying education?' with Dan Fitzpatrick and John Warner, here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/about/disagreeing-well/the-bridge-podcast

It’s World Biodiversity Day (22 May) and UCL has committed to becoming a Nature Positive University🌳

This means putting nature at the heart of how we operate, teach and research.

We’re taking action by:

• Mapping biodiversity across our campuses
• Understanding our wider environmental impact, including supply chains
• Setting targets to improve biodiversity outcomes
• Creating a biodiversity working group to lead the work

Across UCL, this builds on the Wild UCL campaign – from greener spaces on campus to projects that support habitats and wildlife.

Our researchers are also leading the way globally, developing new ways to measure biodiversity and exploring how universities can reduce their impact on nature.

Want to get involved?
We’re inviting staff and students to express interest in joining a biodiversity working group and help shape what comes next.
