Solar PV training at The Electrical Academy ☀️

With the hot weather this week, it’s a timely reminder of how important renewable technologies are becoming within the electrical industry.

This week, Mark has been delivering our C&G 2922-34 Solar Photovoltaic Systems course, supporting electricians who want to develop their knowledge of solar PV installation and maintenance.

Solar work requires a clear understanding of the system, safe installation methods, and the standards that apply. As demand for renewable technologies continues to grow, this qualification helps electricians add a valuable skill set to the work they can offer.

Proud to see our apprentices representing The Electrical Academy at SkillELECTRIC 2026 ⚡

Yesterday, some of our apprentices took part in the SkillELECTRIC National Heats, putting their skills to the test alongside electrotechnical students and apprentices from across the UK.

SkillELECTRIC is the UK’s premier electrical installation skills competition, organised by NET in partnership with WorldSkills UK, giving young people in the trade the chance to demonstrate their ability in a professional competition environment.

Taking part takes preparation, focus and strong practical standards, from planning and installation through to safe working and attention to detail. We’re very proud of our apprentices for stepping up, representing the Academy, and challenging themselves in a national competition.

A big thank you to their employers for supporting their development:
Gilbert and Stamper Ltd Electrics

Thank you also to the SkillELECTRIC organisers, judges and event sponsors for creating such a valuable opportunity for apprentices across the industry.

At Elex Show London, we asked Mark and Kevin, Directors of The Electrical Academy, along with exhibitors including Click Scolmore, NAPIT and Electrical Safety First, for their advice on what correct electrical training should look like.

Becoming qualified takes time, real experience and a course that matches the work you want to do. Make sure the training centre is approved by a recognised awarding organisation, with clear entry criteria, transparent course content and a syllabus that shows exactly what you’re working towards.

The TESP website is a useful for understanding recognised routes into the electrical industry:

If you’re unsure which route applies to you, we can help point you in the right direction.

For employers, one of the key parts of supporting an electrical apprentice is finding the right balance between productive site work and meaningful learning.

It can be as simple as giving the apprentice a clear role for the day, choosing one useful learning focus, then taking a few minutes afterwards to review what they worked on, what they observed, and whether it links to their portfolio.

Over time, those small learning moments help apprentices build the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for a career in the electrical industry.

If you’re an employer thinking about taking on an apprentice, get in touch and we’ll talk you through how the apprenticeship works.

Electrical training is practical, detailed and safety-critical. Learners need time with equipment, time to ask questions, and direct feedback while they are carrying out the work.

At The Electrical Academy, classes are kept to a maximum of 10 learners, giving tutors more time with each person during both theory and practical sessions.

Smaller groups mean more opportunities for feedback and a training environment where different experience levels can be properly supported.

Commercial work brings three-phase supplies and larger distribution into play. That changes what “normal” looks like, more boards, more sub-distribution, more circuits to identify, and more importance on clear labelling and methodical isolation planning.

At The Electrical Academy, learners build familiarity with these systems through structured training, so the transition into commercial environments feels technically grounded.

Technical skill develops with time and practice. The right attitude towards learning, safety and responsibility is what gives that skill a solid foundation. It’s what helps learners become electricians who can be trusted to work carefully, communicate well, and take ownership of the systems they install.

People who progress well are usually the ones who listen properly, ask for clarification, and take feedback seriously. They understand that standards are there for a reason, and stopping to check something is part of working safely and professionally.

At The Electrical Academy, we support learners at different stages of their journey, from those starting out to those building on existing experience, with training that develops both technical skill and professional standards.

If you’re considering electrical training, or you’re an employer looking to support someone into the trade, get in touch.⚡️

Electrical work suits people who like using their brain and their hands. You’re not just fitting parts, you’re planning, checking, solving problems, and working to standards that matter.

If you’re thinking about training, The Electrical Academy can help you understand what the day-to-day of the trade actually involves.

Commercial sites want competence to be clear from the outset. Site inductions, health and safety requirements, access controls, and documented training all form part of how risk is managed on larger projects.

At The Electrical Academy, our training prepares learners for that environment, not only the technical work, but the expectations around standards, working methods, and evidence that sits behind the job. If you’re looking to move into more commercial work, we can help you understand the training route that supports it.

Before taking on your first electrical apprentice, it helps to look at the range of work your business can offer.

The Electrical Academy apprenticeship is aimed at those starting a career as a domestic and commercial electrician, covering electrical installation and maintenance, with training in inspection and testing, fault finding, and single and three phase systems.

If you’re unsure whether your current workload gives that coverage, The Electrical Academy can help you map out what experience the apprentice will need and plan the right structure and support around it.

ELEX Show London 2026, Alexandra Palace ⚡

Spending time with manufacturers, suppliers and industry specialists is so valuable when the industry is always moving. New products, updated tools, changing standards and different ways of working all shape what electricians need to understand. Elex Show, is a fantastic opportunity to speak with exhibitors about the kit, ideas and developments being discussed across the trade.

A big thank you to the organisers for putting another great show together, and to everyone who took the time to speak with us.
